To be fair, I did think something like that closer to the beginning of that episode (Secret of My Excess). The ending is what changed that opinion.

^ It’s EXACTLY what happened. Didn’t you watch it? She saw the ruby, wanted it, and gave Spike that look. He gave it to her.

I would assume it was for the joke, though some people are really into the concept that the characters don’t actually like each other.

I hope this was for the sake of the joke and whoever made this doesn’t actually think that’s what happened.

The funny part is Spike didn’t give her the ruby because he wanted anything from her, he did it to make her happy. In reality, she gave Spike he considered far more valuable, a kiss on the cheek, than a good meal.
