Why? Because of the head cannon that Twilight is like Spike’s mom? Something that’s been prevalent in the show for years? How is it wrong for Twilight, an adult, to have a close relationship with an orphan child that she helped hatch?

I think it’s more along the lines of why Celestia’s school would have his egg. It didn’t just appear out of nowhere after all.
On another topic, why is the question of who Spike’s parents are important? They haven’t shown up in all of his life, and in all eight seasons of the show, so I kinda doubt they would’ve cared enough to raise him… or they’re dead.

Well, in the episode, they claim that Spike is famous though thanks to the Crystal Empire and being hatched by Twilight. And, I mean, he’s friends with Ember now too.
It’s from the subbed version of the episode.
Or they don´t know where he is.
Maybe we will see a reunion one day.
Orphan does not just mean parents dead. They clearly never came for him.
