Yeah, for the first names: Sunset represents the sun setting; Starlight: represents the stars and the aurora, that’s what makes them different, however the thing that makes them similar is their last names.

No she isn’t, she’s a unicorn. Why would she be a phenomena that happens in the sky at the end of every afternoon and leads into the night? Also, I’m pretty sure sunsets are yellow and orange, not purple.

I believe that even with Twilight, the 3 are indeed similar in more ways than you might think.  

Sunset was bullied and was overwhelmed by both the crown in an alien universe and the friendship laser.  
Starlight didn’t have to face consequences and wasn’t even defeated.

Nah. One of them had no real reason to turn evil, was quick to redeem herself when offered friendship, and went on to be a very important part of her social group, even taking on a leadership role.
 
The other was Starlight Glimmer.
