Personally, I never understood why you couldn’t have both the science and magic be true in this world. There’s been enough times on the show itself where the princesses have been missing or incapacitated with no interruption in day or night to suggest that whatever world Equestria is on has some kind of orbital situation, but then you also have that time Twilight temporarily had Celestia and Luna’s powers as proof they absolutely have that kind of magical control as well.
A part of me wants to think it’s actually a lot more complicated of a situation, like the planet is too close to its sun and without the occasional magical boost would end up tidally locked with one side always facing the light and one in darkness (swiftly rendering most of the world uninhabitable), and they just dumb it down to the general population as “raising the sun and moon” since that’s what it looks like.
