It's because of inertia... When your face hits the ground, friction and pressure try to stop it's momentum, but your flank has nothing to act on it except for the rest of your body, which is flexible... So logically, when you hit the ground at an angle greater than 45 degrees, your flank's forward momentum won't be canceled out by the ground, only slowed as your body's springiness tries to force it back to place.


 
While you might like it, it poses a serious threat to the pony's spine, as the pressure applied to their spine could break it and lead to serious spinal damage.
