yeah, basically this. i love spike from later seasons, and stuff like the wings and his friendships with thorax and ember are just enough development for him.  
and personally i’d much rather see a backstory for him than giving him some “destiny”. which even then is not possible at this point cause the show’s ending, but with stuff like the wings and his new friends outside his pony circle, i don’t mind at all if we see his backstory or not.

This is swag-canon.

Nothing is coming for Spike. Maybe just, like, another episode. He’s a supporting character in a Fluttershy episode, we know.
 
Spike fans (like me. lumping myself in here) should just be happy enough he got wings. It’s a genuine status-quo change that the showrunners seem to actually have not had disappear into the background, and even though it’s not a huge change really, it also doesn’t feel underdeveloped like other stuff with him.

Spike has become the Hero of the Crystal Empire, the Dragon Lord, and the first non-changeling to make friends with a changeling. What more honors does he need?

Why do I get the feeling that this is being misinterpreted?

Spike being uncertain about his place in the world and wanting to figure out who he is beyond being Twilight’s assistant has been a major part of his character since Season 2. I doubt that this means that anything particularly unusual is coming up.
 
I mean, I wouldn’t be terribly surprised if we get another major Spike episode before the show ends, but I don’t expect the show to have some major game-changing plot twist in store beyond a continuation of what’s already been worked with.

To be fair, the same initial character bios implied Rainbow Dash would find/make something better than the wonderbolts as well. There’s a lot of those details that probably won’t happen the way the original team wanted.

That’s not the case, While it may seem Spike’s already happy with his life the show itself hardly makes him relevant to the show. I say this because Spike is more of a reactive character while the Mane 6 are active because they move the plot while Spike doesn’t because apparently Spike’s being Twilight’s assistant is his main goal.
 
Knowing there’s a lot of potential to him and his character with him being a Dragon, his origins still in question and vice versa. Since Spike doesn’t have any other proactive role other than being a straight man to Twilight and trying to win Rarity’s heart which I might bluntly add is kind of a stretch. The fact that a character doesn’t want anything nor doesn’t do anything comes off as problematic especially to characters who are reactive than active.
 
If that’s truly the case then the only chance of Spike being a good character is when he is not the main character.

Not to mention he has alota friends! The Mane 6 are going to Canterlot to lead Equestria, and Starlight, Big Mac, and Smolder are in Ponyville! So no matter what choice he makes, he’s leaving friends behind and will stay with others.

This is the final season so this is Habro’s last chance to give Spike’s character justice, here’s hoping.

It that’s the case, they’re doing a poor job showing it. If Spike’s destiny is always to be Twilight’s number 2, then say so. If that’s really the route they want to go, it seems like they’re leaving it to the viewers to figure out. Its a missed opportunity for character development (which seems to be one of the only real running themes about Spike from the staff) and, honestly, its just bad storytelling.

People keep talking about some ultimate life-changing destiny for Spike. He forfeited the opportunity to be Dragon Lord to stay with his friends in Ponyville. He’s already where he wants to be with the people he wants to be with. Has it occurred to anyone that maybe he’s already living his dream?

I ain’t giving up on him! Even if it doesn’t happen in season 9 - there could still be specials! All they said was season 9 is the last season, but they never said there won’t be any specials! ;) Or it could happen this season still! There’s only been 3 episodes! XD

I know right? And why did they make Twilight give life to a dragon egg in the first place? If that was something that were done in a daily basis then many of the ponies from Canterlot would be walking around with their own dragon assistants.

I’m more interested in the “Found Orphaned as an egg” part. Has that ever been referenced before this or anywhere else? It’s the first time I’ve ever seen any detail about Spike’s egg. Also what do they mean his origins remain a mystery? They just said he was found as an orphaned egg…

I don’t think it will happen in S9, not with these story editors. Be lucky if Spike even resolve his crush on Rarity becasue they might ignore it too

You underestimate him - he has a chance! They didn’t start the Pillar arc till the second half of season 7, so in the second half of the season, maybe… just maybe…

If this was done a season or two ago, I could buy it but its way too late for this now. Either they’re going to ignore it in the end or rush it so badly, it comes across as a mangled, incoherent mess. He’s likely to only get 1-2 eps here in the last season, maybe 3 if he’s lucky. Not really conducive for a whole new thematic rollout for a longstanding character.
