My only fear here is that this means Starlight doesn’t really love Spike and it all this was just some form of control. And that would the biggest tragedy of the series.

Which isn’t what happened. What made you think Twilight had no control over her actions or that she didn’t want to be out there flying a kite?
If hypnosis makes you do something against your own will without being aware of what you’re doing, than yeah, i’m pretty sure that’s how mind control works.
She used mind control on twice in “Every Little Thing She Does” and in “Starlight the ladybug Hypnotist” episode.
She used mind control on everyone except Spike, she didn’t even want Trixie to use him as a guinea pig for her magic practices, the only time she ever used magic on him was to protect him from danger, but she never made him do anything against his will.
It seems like Spike has a deeper and more complex relationship with Starlight than he does with Lily. Sure his relationship with Lily is cute and sweet, but at least right now it doesn’t seem like much more than puppy love.
Regardless of what happens I have little question that Starlight really cares about Spike. The fact that she’s questioning her own behavior towards him makes it clear that she doesn’t want to hurt him. I sure hope both of them can get through this without too much more pain.
