Starlight:  
  1. Had well intentions, at first. Her methods to achieve those intentions were extreme.  
  2. Lost everything she had when the mane 6 came along the first time around.  
  3. Still has to live with the knowledge that her actions might have resulted in Equestria turning into a wasteland. I say might because those alternate timelines ultimately didn’t happen. Cozy’s actions in the season 8 finale would definitely have resulted in even worse things happening to main Equestria.  
  4. Accepted the chance to be reformed after her second defeat.

Funny, my mom is annoyed at my dad because he’s apparently trusting too much in a work adcquitance that my mom has heard a lot and tells him that he shouldn’t be that trusting. Specially when work is at stake.

In my continuity/headcanon, they are unsealed shortly after Twilight’s coronation. They are given very strict parole guidelines and restrictions and while the process was not easy, all three of them eventually find their happy endings.

I think it is clear these three villains deserve redemption arcs, which DHX is not able to provide given that this is the last year of the contract between DHX and Hasbro.  
Even if Tara Strong is right, and FiM returns under a new name or new form soon, it will probably not be with this team.  
So, this is the next best thing. Them being imprisoned in stone gives us a set up for a redemption arc.
