Regardless, Discord is the only confirmed case of anyone escaping petrification on their own, and Discord, while not invincible, is an extremely powerful wizard, with only Tirek surpassing him at higher levels of power.
 
Notably, when Twilight (a powerful mage herself) was petrified by a cockatrice in S1, she had no idea what had happened afterwards.
 
It just feels rather disingenuous to act like “those three can escape from stone later and are conscious like Discord,” because well, Chrysalis is the only one of them with actually somewhat powerful magic by default, before draining others (which she can do, with love), and she was less powerful than a Twilight clone that might not have been equal to the original.
 
It’d be stranger if Discord was the norm by any stretch, than if he was an atypical case, you know?
 
As for the reasoning of “conscious in stone,” I think people do it because, well, one, taking Discord to be the norm, and two, because they find it to be more interesting.
 
Also, I think it’s possibly worth noting there’s no evidence, going by the transcript, that Celestia, Luna, Cadance, or Tempest were aware of anything while in stone, in the movie. There wasn’t any dialogue to reflect that one way or the other.

Well, nowhere has it said he was an almighty god, and seeing as times he’s been tricked, as well, Discord can’t necessarily hear everything.
 
And we don’t know for sure if there’s ever been any other breakouts.

Discord is basically a god with unlimited powers. Chrysalis, Tirek and Cozy Glow aren’t. Just because he was able to hear outside noises from his stone prison that doesn’t mean Chrysalis, Tirek and Cozy Glow can do the same. Also Discord can hear everything even from miles away since he was literally been able to hear what the mane 6 was rambling about the princesses even though he wasn’t even near the place in S9 E17.
 

 
Tartarus has been a solid prison for over a millennia since no one was basically managed to escape from it, the only two occasions was when Cerberus left his post in season 2 episode 20 and when Discord teleported Cozy Glow and Tirek out of Tartarus. But other than that for over a 1,000 years never any other breakouts happened.

I dunno, Discord made it pretty clear he could still hear, and such. So it’s basically not too different from being imprisoned in Tartarus, except harder to escape.
 
That’s why I assume they did it, if they just put ’em in Tartarus, they could just escape somehow again.

You can’t. Being petrified is literally the equivalent of getting turned into a statue. The only thing you would experience is being squished in complete darkness.

What they got is literally the most cruel punishment, only death would be worse than that. Imagine being petrified, not being able to move a single muscle…

I don’t see how that’d be much better really, as they’d just be locked away in cramped cages, and seeing as that place is practically Pony Hell.
