AJ has dedicated herself to looking after the family farm.
 
As for Rainbow,I do not know what the hell she is doing. She is only one without biological siblings. Therefore, if she doesn’t find herself a mate, it is likely the Rainbow Line will end.

I would have preferred if Twilight herself was the final villain of the series, having to fight against her tyrant alternate self that is hellbent on ENFORCING Friendship onto her subjects. Just like how the Justice League became overbearing to the populace they’ve sworn to protect when they became the Justice Lords.
 
The “Perfect” Princess of Friendship who desires the perfect utopia that has manifested as a physical form.

Considering her earlier experiences with ponies not taking her seriously as a ruler. It’s understandable why she’d take this more regal form.
 
Though I do imagine she’s mastered a shape shifting spell that can allow her to appear in a form similar to her old appearance whenever she needs to blend in and be relatable to her subjects.

And designs are expected to grow with the character. Not just biologically, which actually makes sense here, but also because of story. The story started with Celestia sending Twilight to learn, now it ends with Twilight sending a new unicorn to learn. In order to best pull this off, you need what in the writing world is called a mirror scene in which not only does Twilight takes Celestia’s place but is also in the same form of power compared to her. This kind of scene is meant to be a passing of the torch in its ultimate finality.
 
That clearly what the MLP writers wanted to do here. Heck even Faust herself said years ago that she wanted Twilight to replace Celestia. We can argue on whether she meant meteorically or literally all day, but what is clear is she wanted Twilight to one day replace Celestia. The writers this season clearly see the best way of doing that is with a mirror scene.
 
We may not like it, but it makes perfect story sense for them to go this route.

It’s not a matter of choosing the picture to me, it’s a matter of design matching character. We all knew how it was going to end with the tweets and the season trailer, but I didn’t expect Twilight to look like celestia.

Minus the glowing eyes,of course. Twilight’s model fit the character we saw for most of the series. The ethereal mane and regalia still let you know who’s the princess, but making her a similar stature to everyone else matches her attitude of ‘important, but somehow not alienating.’
