Reminds me of a Chinese moon gate more than anything.

There were a number of designs the arch went through, but this one was based off a real world structure I saw. I didnt think much of it until I put a mock up next to the other designs. Almost unanimous approval from all involved in the project, so I ran with it.

An actual crowd-count statistician weighed in once and used standard industry methods to estimate the population of Ponyville based on crowd scenes in Seasons 1 and 2; as I recall their estimate was around 3500-4000.

Given that it was Joey selecting and putting each of the ponies in place, by hand, you might be vastly overestimating the number of unintentional inclusions.
