Another unfun addendum to this, or fun depending on how you look at it is: the Sicilian mob was nearly whipped out by Mussolini during his reign. But Allied forces landing in Southern Italy found them to be opportune assets to help govern occupied Italy, meaning they could devote more troops to actually fighting through Italy and not for policing and occupation duties. As more land was ceded to mob governance, America began deporting it’s incarcerated mobsters back to Italy to get rid of them.
 
The reborn Mafia was the primary force to the return of heroin in the US, which had by and large almost disappeared as a drug over the course of WW2 due to war-time economic priorities and German U-boat activities making it difficult to actually get high grade Turkish morphine base to the states so junkies basically weened themselves off on super low grade Mexican heroin. But many of the mobsters now in Italy were veterans of the trade and knew how thirsty American dope-fiends were so they quickly found ways to get saddle the States with the monkey again.
 
They also helped murder unions and Communists in Italy and basically contributed to the decades known as the Years Of Lead where every conspiracy ever that could exist existed in Italy.
