I agree with you on this, a cartoon character should have a distinct silhouette or design that can convey the character’s archetype or personality. With the mane 6 it’s pretty clear at a glance which one’s the shy one and which one’s hyper.
It’s more hard to tell with these characters since their design philosophy is wholly different from what we’re used to. It doesn’t help that they have the same creepy expression that tells me that they have no personality at all.

Yep,your bias do show in the description of the G4 characters unfortunately but i understand the bias and i dont judge it, G4 lasted for a full decades,of course we(me included) are going to have pretty arrested ideas on the codes and tropes of MLP

But can you tell from their looks? Because you shouldn’t have to. Their biggest personality traits should be clearly visible. This is especially true for cartoons.

Pink pony has an easy going pose, balloons as cutiemarks, and a mane that looks like cotton candy. She looks like a happy and cheerful person who like throwing parties.
Blue pony is somewhat tough. Mane is pretty generic, though the front looks a little like a fire. Combined with her confident pose and lightning cutiemark, I’d say she is confident and maybe even a little rude.
The brown one is obviously a farm pony who loves apples. The multitude of apples aside, her mane looks like you find on girls back in older American culture in farmers. Also she has brown farmhorse colors. The green eyes also help sell that.
Speaking of eyes:
Pinkie’s baby blue says “childish”
Rainbow’s magenta has attitude
And Applejack’s green is about nature.
Now, I might be biased due to already knowing what they are like. But I can still look at their designs and deduct their personality traits from there.
So what about the new designs? On first glance, you surely can’t tell what they are about, other than “cute pink pony”. One of them might be royalty due to her golden headband and tidy, flowy mane. The one with the cyan mane might like sowing due to her cutiemark. I suppose her puffy mane could mean that she is also slightly on a more cheerful side.
I have no clue at all what the brown one is supposed to be about. The is so extremely generic that not even looking at her in detail yield anything for me.
Except for Rainbow Dash, it is obvious what the mane 6 characters are about even if you just get a glimpse of them.
In these new designs, you have to take a very careful look to decipher what in the world they are about, and even then you still might fail.

The Earth Pony is an idealist (assuming she’s the main character). Previous information (officially released weeks ago) mentioned the main character would be an activist who wanted to improve Equestria.
