I really can’t compare it with Season 9.  
The knights being old enemies of Discord makes a lot of sense than Discord being Grogar just because of… whatever the writers wanted to do, but the thing is… Whitley executes it in a way with many plotholes about the relationship between Discord and the other species.
 
Now the funny thing is, Whitley really don’t need making other elements of harmony to create the knights, was more simple and even more effective putting them just like an extremist harmony group that when they sees Discord is related with Equestria, they just wants to destroy the entire country for being related with a disharmony spirit.

Here’s my attempt at recanonizing if you will.
 
After the disaster Cosmos had caused and therefore Discord had to seal her away, he took over Equestria, and feeling relieved that she’s out of his life, he starts his fun. But the other creatures don’t appreciate it remembering Cosmos’ havoc, so that made him sad but he tries not to show it. The knights then came at a very wrong time, assuming he was the ruler. Having the mischievous streak he can never get rid off else he would change or disappear, decided to manipulate the other races to turn against the knights which caused the latter to do what they must. Celestia and Luna came very late imprisoning him for very long periods which embittered him till the next time he was released in season 2.

Season 9 2: Electric Boogaloo, Discord Messes Big Time.

So Discord is kind of responsible for this whole mess?  
Not really a good idea to use Discord being behind the comic’s final threat given how he caused the final threat in the show(and how that left a terrible taste in many fans’ mouths)

Have you noticed that Discord did not use his magic when he was manipulating the others against Cunebula? It is obvious that he had explained something very convincing that led the dogs, cats and zebras to launch an attack on Cunabula. What was he telling them? Much can be said about Discord, but lying is not among his best qualities, one of his weaknesses is that he failed to lie convincingly, he preferred to manipulate through the use of magic and ingenious plans without breaking his principles. I do not remember Discord having come up with an open lie, although his stories and statements often have huge gaps that make these unbelievable.
 
We still have something missing; the motive. Where is the motive for cunabulans when they should “help” others, just “loved what they had made”? It is obvious that those who had received help and then turned to them were not corrupt - they do not show signs of it, instead it seems that they launched the attack under something reminiscent of desperation. It is VERY interesting to note that these have only built temples, but not given away the elements - because it was never in their place. Could it mean that dogs, cats and zebras already had these elements? Why then should cunabulans go to others and help them if they cannot create elements? Could that mean that Discord explained the truth? Sometimes the truth is the best weapon.
 
And it is possible that Celestia and Luna had met the “knights”, and rejected them because they realized what kind of nature these consist of, pure arrogance. They preferred to defeat Discord on their own. And it is noted that the “knights” could not hit Discord with their own elements. I think Discord never knew what happened because he had been petrified while attacking Cunabula, and had not been outside Equestria in all the years he was released. Celestia and Luna, who will surely have destroyed the island, did not know about this because these “knights” made their victims forget. In fact, the disappearance of magic - memory loss - loss of fellowship - loss of charity - what happened to the cats, zebras, dogs and birds is too similar to what happened to the ponies in the G5.
 
From a human perspective, the crimes of the “knights” are unforgivable and unacceptable, and so dangerous that they must be eliminated - permanently, not because of their power or crimes, but because of their state of mind with strong arrogance, too Nazi-like. Once the “knights” are taken away, something must be done with Cunabula, perhaps it must be sealed from the rest of the world or occupied. As soon as the heads of the other realms realized what they were exposed to, they would demand retaliation.
 
And Jeremy Whitley should be banned forever from future MLP publications. He’s given us shit. I’m tired of this nonsense.

I think Discord actually saved Equestria by forcing them away, moreover it is obvious that Celestia and Luna will reject them right away because they are too arrogant and headstrong. These are not the type you want to have anything to do with. It is clearly more than what is said here.

Celestia and Luna with their enemies from the past: Of course, those villains from 1000 years ago… they done that random crap but we defeated them.
 
Discord with his enemies from the past: Don’t want to mention it or just don’t remind them.

They’re bigger arrogant a****** than I thought. Instead of helping and healing, as Twilight would have done, they chose to destroy and destroy again, doing the opposite of what harmony meant! These in truth do not represent harmony at all!
 
Of course, this means that Discord has a lot to blame for this, but we do not yet have the whole picture, and to be honest, these “knights” reacted so destructively, arrogantly and evil that it is unbelievable - they are worse than Sombra, as in it at least were far more honest and open about his actions, as they meant their actions could be justified!
 
Twilight will EXPLODE when she realizes how incredibly arrogant these are, they do not deserve anything!

Those were mostly temporary. What I mean is that if the Knights had arrived at any other time then there’d probably be a big ol’ alliance between all the nations.

I find it extra amusing just how much bad timing this is.
 
Like, if the Knights had arrived earlier they could’ve found the Equestrian Elements and Equestria could’ve stopped Discord’s reign before it began. If they arrived later then there’d be no Discord, so they wouldn’t turn against everyone.
 
No matter how you slice it, Discord screwed up harmony and friendship on an intercontinental level.

I think this shows how much people underestimated discord as a antagonist, he was stated to have had equestria in a eternal state of unrest and unhappiness and all people thought about was chocolate rain lol. Its kinda amazing he has come as far as he has.

The first one is Grogar, then Pony of Shadows, after Discord and finally Nightmare Moon. I don’t know where Sombra and Tirek fits.

Of all the times to make first contact, it happened while Discord was running around. Bad timing man.
 
Also apparently the chronologically last villains of G4 are antagonists because of the (more or less) chronological first villain. That’s kinda poetic.

It’s Whitley’s Discord, the Discord who almost regrets about everything, so i don’t think that’s the case.

Can’t wait to see Discord try to pin the blame on his ex-girlfriend this time.
