I love most of Doug's reviews, and in that one, he has a point: you can't "epic-ify" a story that wasn't meant to be epic in the first place.

MLP writers struggle to make complex stories, but it was never meant for more complex stories. It was always meant as a slice-of-life show that makes jokes and teaches life lessons. The "event" episodes that open and close the seasons are the exception, not the rule.

That's why neither of the three Legion members got much in the way of backstory.

Mario and Sonic have the same issue: they originals games are simply "Eggman/Bowser is wrecking havoc, go stop him". Writers always struggle to make Mario/Sonic stories more complex, because they were never meant to be complex in the first place.
