You seemingly forget that the showrunners themselves have mentioned that G5 is a continuation of G4. And naturally the dragons would be yet another connection to G4, being the same dragons that we saw in FiM.

Assuming this one wasn’t just misplaced, and dragons are simply thriving somewhere else.

If they were extinct then that egg wouldn’t exist.

My thoughts exactly!
My guess is the Sparky was displaced from his original home, and got swept up by the sea, eventually landing in Maretime Bay.
Sure, the dragons hadn’t been seen in many centuries, but that’s likely due to the loss of magic and everypony separating from each other. When that calamity happened, all other creatures retreated to their own homelands, including the dragons. This does bring up the possibility of the Mane Five ‘rediscovering’ the dragon kingdom in a future season of Make your Mark. With their work being done reuniting the ponies of Equestria, it gives them more time to do such things.

Great… first Gadget Hackwrench got married to the fly, and now MLP kills off its dragons. This has been the worst summer for animation plot reveals and it’s not even Memorial Day yet.

Here in the human world, on a place called the Scottish Highlands, there was a little fire breathing dragon who, like you, lived in harmony with another race: humans. Turns up, though, that out of this world someone heard about dragons. This alien race wanted to make something sure and sent a couple of emissaries to Earth. Their descendants forgot about their alien origins and dwelled the Earth for millenia. One of the emissaries was a dragon girl like Smolder and Grisù and her fell in love and went to her planet: the era of dragons had passed for Earth. So, there you have it, Spike. Equestrian dragons were aliens from another world that just went back home when ponies started losing their magic. You were probably one of them! Their time in Equestria had also passed. Until a lost dragon egg hatched and Sparky came to be.

Yep, this is the plot for an Italian cartoon from the 70s mixed with some silliness, and not an actual story from the elders, but I just can’t stand seeing these eyes… Too bad he won’t react, huh?
