No, it would be a huge cop-out. And STOP. CALLING. HER. TWILICORN! Just because a character has gotten wings doesn’t mean they’re now a totally different character. Look at Optimus Prime, he’s been upgraded multiple times but he’s still Optimus. Look at Tatsurion in Kaijudo. At the end of the first season, he now has the ability to breathe fire and has retractable wings. But he’s still the same character. If you’re going to judge a character on their appearance, well guess what? That’s a pretty shallow judgement. I like Twilight in her new form. I like seeing her this way. I like that she’s GROWN UP. She’s come of age, she’s now at a new stage of learning. Why would she abandon her friends when she wouldn’t have made it that far without them? She’s the ELEMENT OF MAGIC AND THE ELEMENTS OF HARMONY DON’T WORK IF ONE FACTOR IS OUT OF THE EQUATION! If you take away her wings, you not only change her appearance, you take away three seasons of character development and growth. Besides, I can already TELL SHE’S STILL GOING TO LIVE IN PONYVILLE. You know why? Because there’s nowhere else BUT Ponyville. Celestia rules Canterlot just fine all by herself, Luna rules her own kingdom just fine as well and Cadance and Shining Armor rule the Crystal Empire just fine. Unless the fourth season premiere proves me wrong, the first episode involves Celestia assigning Twilight to be Ponyville’s regent princess and the episode involves her being a massive center of attention and she gets stressed out until she decides to just act herself.

@Background Pony
A huge amount of fans already see the wings as pointless. We want the old Twilight back, and it would at least give us the hope that they listen to the fans enough to turn back a Hasbro mandate. I am going to be skeptical of season 4 regardless, but changing Twilight back to her old self would at least be a step in the right direction for winning the fans’ trust back.

Seriously, of someone can find it in them to defend MMC, they will find it in them to defend retconning it away. Those are not the fans DHX should be worried about losing, because it’s in their nature to defend what happens in the show. No one is going to quit the show just because DHX took away Twilicorn.

@bboifatz
But my point still stands. Getting rid of her wings wouldn’t cause a huge amount of the fans rejoicing, it would result in the fans asking “Well why did she get wings in the first place if they were just going to get rid of them after just one episode?” It’s not that simple.

@Background Pony
She got her cutiemark because Rainbow Dash did a Sonic Rainboom, just like her friends did. If anything, that episode showed Rainbow Dash as being the instrumental member of their destinies (and it just happens that she is Lauren’s favorite).

And her element is a tiara, not a crown. It made sender because her element is magic, magic comes from her horn, and the tiara is on top of her horn.
Background Pony #75D6
@Niggoslav_Krawczyk
No, getting rid of her wings would be far worse than her getting them in the first place. It would’ve made all of the buildup that the first and second seasons to that moment seem absolutely POINTLESS.
Background Pony #75D6
@bboifatz
WHAT!? Good points? Did you even pay attention to the show at all? The show made hints that Twilight was going to become something more. Her power is greater than any of the Mane 6 even at foalhood, her babysitter was a princess and her element is a friggin’ CROWN.

@KirbyfanNeox I liked the thought of Twilight in a graveyard though D:
It’s where she belongs until she gets rid of those damned wings!

Yeah, essentially children normally don’t have bullshit detectors until around 9-12, unless their parents are lying, thieving skinflints. They’ll basically watch anything provided you give it enough colour or PIZZAZZ or randum action. Thing is though that companies think they should just turn the dial all one way, and don’t bother exercising that other option. Kids can apply smartly when the show gives them an opportunity to do so. In fact going with the Avatar example, I saw a lot of in-denial lovestruck teenage girls get shot down by 8 and 9 year olds saying that “yes you big dummy Jet really is dead!” They can catch more shit than execs realise. At the same time they will not be advanced enough to understand differences in writing and humour, or be unable to tell when or where something is going bad, so say, you get a kid who thinks Coconut Fred, Annoying Orange, and Spongebob are all exactly the same, or they will think Samurai Jack isn’t all that much different from TMNT until far later. They accept stuff at face value unquestioningly. If a movie says “that character is cool because all the other characters said the way he dresses or acts is cool” (cough Korra) then they go along with it, until they come of age and their BS detector now functions, then they revolt against their “Old Shame” and basically become Gildas and overcompensate in the other direction. “Pffft, yeah, those chipmunks are like, so laaaaaame and kiddie, I only watch South Park now!”

Anyway going back to the topic, they do have a slight twinge, or tingle, at around 7 or 8. I think that’s why you saw things like the ToyWiz poll being against the episode before /mlp/ even got ahold of it, and the even lower approval rating of AliTwi, kids who are old enough to get on and explore the internet for their favourite shows and toylines are beginning to notice where things don’t add up, but they aren’t yet refined enough to actively hate it, or know why they should hate it, they just have a mild distaste for generalisms the episode pushed forth like “All girls want to be princesses” or how the ‘challenge’ of the episode was really no challenge at all and how WASP-y her ‘ascension’ seemed. All they knew was “Why are they turning her into something she wasn’t? Are they going to make her personality change?” There’s no previous setup for ‘graduation from tutoring makes you a princess.’ It likely felt even more out of the blue than her brother and his marriage.

@The_Mungoman
Twilight really got more famous due to mothers’ stupidity, really. Especially those that remember who ‘Lestat’ is and have been fiending for a Vampy Romeo in a movie since Anne Rice ragequit everything ‘dork’ and ‘edji’ and joined a cult, and also older teen girls who are into crappy boy bands and dream of marrying everyone with a James Dean or bowl haircut no matter how much of a lameass they really are. (Just recall The Beatles alone! And they retain that poor taste into adulthood, like all those old boy bands reuniting and selling out concerts as of late. N Sync, New Kids, Boyz) Turds like that getting popular are less ‘stupid kids’ and more ‘social engineering of teens and their moms with peer pressure and fashion mags.’

I know. I have little cousings who love Lord of the Rings and Star Wars, but they also love Fred and Annoying Orange. Kids are still developing so their opinions are generally hit-or-miss. They are an odd mix of clever and foolish that has not been sorted out yet.

@Background Pony
Dude, dude, calm the hell down. I didn’t say anything to insult anyone.
Especially some kid I have never known.
Seriously, who on earth would do such a thing.

But now let’s look at this whole thing again. Children can be both stupid and clever at the same time. That is a fact.
Children can, for instance, tell you everything they read about dinosaurs in a book a few days ago by heart, but then stick their left boot on their right foot and vice versa, before being puzzled as to why they can’t seem put their feet down right.

Same goes for children’s entertainment.
I once asked a kid why he liked Pokémon so much. He replied by saying that Pokémon was awesome because it combined animals, super-powers and collecting things.
And that is a very smart statement.
I also sat through one-and-a-half hours of THIS once, and then had to listen to the children I was escorting about how “cool” that abomination of a movie was because it had Alvin and Alvin was “cool”.
That is not a smart statement.

I’m not saying children are always stupid or always great. But I’m saying that children are sometimes pretty volatile in their descisions.
Sometimes they judge things perfectly and sometimes they judge things… poorly.

Well, there’s this and that.

On the one hand, children can be dumb when they pick their entertainment. My cousins both liked that Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked movie, whilst it simultaneously raped every adult’s ears like a guy with tourettes on helium. Other dumb films that got famous due to children’s stupidity are the Twilight franchise, Pixar’s Cars, the live-action Dr Seuss flicks and so on.

On the other hand, children can be very smart know exactly what they like and oftentimes, it turns out to be very good. Several examples for this are Batman:TAS, Avatar:TLA, almost every Pixar movie, Mario games, etc.

I guess this episode is somewhere in the middle. Even as a child I would have questioned this episode (I am not exaggerating, I could tell a good thing from a bad thing pretty early. For instance, I knew that SpongeBob was losing its edge as soon as the movie came out whilst everyone else was hyped as hell), but I probably wouldn’t have criticized it as harshly. I would have probably dismissed as something stupid and continued to watch some more Avatar:TLA.

They wouldn’t care. I have a niece and she enjoyed it. The only complaint I had was that the ending was a little too rushed and felt more like a set up for the fourth season which, surprise surprise, IT IS!

MMC left us grown adult geeks perplexed and confused with all of its contrived plot devices– imagine how bad it must have been for small children, who everyone says it’s this show’s target audience.

@Background Pony
Well, I’ve explained this on DigiBrony’s MLPAnalysis reddit page in a different context, so I guess I’ll just copypaste some of that stuff here.

“Yes, many of these questions (left open in MMC) will be answered in S4. That doesn’t make this episode any less bad, though.
That is mainly because this episode raised a lot of questions, but it didn’t create a mystery surrounding them. The audience is left puzzling, but the characters aren’t puzzled.
And so, all these open questions feel like plot holes rather than things to be uncovered. Which is another reason I am not too hopeful for S4, because I’m afraid the writers forgot about all these glaring faults just like they expected the audience to.”
