We Will Be Adored - Part 62 - Page 1/9
(re-upload: fixed an issue with the license notification)
Time to meet mom!
I’m back in business after a bunch of Life Events and software issues. I’m hoping to get back to my old 1-2 episodes per month schedule, but we’ll see. This episode is more serious and story based, but more sexy times are up for the next one!
No singles from this one unless anyone REALLY wants a picture of Adagio talking. :)

Hey, I just noticed a little typo on your notice. Gorgotten? That should probably say forgotten.
Whoops! Thank you for spotting that. Fixed.
ooo i like Ruby’s missing foot, nice detail! Wonder if it’ll be a part of the plot
It ties in to her backstory, but the foot itself isn’t going to be a HUGE thing, just a part of her life.
Though also, the hoof is part of the leg, not the plot, silly. :)
Though I suppose you could try to tie it to Hank Green’s perennial question: “Is butt legs?”

That was actually really interesting! And sounds like a lot more work than what I had to do. When your batches are only 5 gallons, things get a lot easier. XD
Also, lots of sex, you say? scribbles down notes for story ideas
@Gnot Even
Good idea. But couldn’t find one at the local Menard’s.
You have just outed yourself as being from roughly where I am from. >.>
You see why we need you around here, Stellarator? Can’t think of any other artists who attract threads like this.
I cannot stress how much I love that I have readers who make comment threads go like this in what is ostensibly still a porn comic. XD

you crawl inside with a little plastic shovel (don’t want to scratch anything inside that kettle so no metal allowed)
Should have used a wooden one. More historically accurate, and wood holds it’s strength better in the heat than plastic.

I did home brewing fairly extensively
Oh! Then you’re all set!
I would be quite interested in any anecdotes or stories you might have!
It is almost entirely a day of wearing lab coats and working with yeast and caustic cleaners and chemicals and driving fork lifts and being scientific.
Except for the part where you have to strip down and crawl inside the brew kettle and shovel out the “spent grain” after mashing.
With smaller breweries or older kettles - those old vintage copper kettles - when you’re done mashing and have moved the wort to your lautering tun, there’s a bunch of compacted, cooked grain inside the kettle you have to get rid of. This video shows a more modern setup. But on vintage setups there’s no automatic or mechanical rake, and you get what you can from the open door, but then someone has to crawl inside and shovel the rest out, especially if you have a big steam ring inside the kettle.
So when the mash is done you strip down to just your knickers and your thick rubber Wellies and you crawl inside with a little plastic shovel (don’t want to scratch anything inside that kettle so no metal allowed) and you shovel.
The kettle is still, like, maybe 120°F inside, and the grain is hotter, and the whole thing is filled with steam. Aiming a big fan at the mash door helps, but then you’re either cooking or freezing from the breeze. But at least that way there’s more oxygen in there ^_^
The one I worked with was this one.
medium
I loved brewing. You get there at 3 AM and get stuff cleaned up and prepped and warming up and filling with water, and then you pour yourself a beer. Then when you’ve added your grains and long hops and while the mash is temperature resting you pour yourself a beer. Then when you’re done with the mash and running the wort into the lautering tun you pour yourself a beer.
Then you get inside that kettle and shovel like you’re a five year old on the farm again.
Then you shower off the molasses-like sugar all over your legs and arms and you change into street clothes and you pour yourself a beer with the next brewer while they get ready for their shift.
When I was doing it, you drank constantly. But never felt drunk or like you’d even had a single drink. But you were also sweating CONSTANTLY. Except when you were freezing because the building was so cold except for when the mash tun was filling the place with steam.
It’s good times :)
And people were constantly fucking on the stacks of cardboard boxes filled with empty bottles on the bottling floor. Nice dark quiet little space where no one ever turned on the lights or went except to bottle beer or fuck.
I understand the industry has changed, or so I am told 9_9.

At one time the idea that Berry Punch was a vintner by profession was popular. So if you were just randomly going to include winemaking, then you’d presumably use Berry. But, of course, you have a dedicated character for the purpose. And, after all that, I imagine Ms Cabernet’s 9 to 5 job will not be the main focus of this arc, anyway :-)
Somehow I had missed that. The portrayal of her I’ve always seen is that of an…enthusiastic enjoyed of wine, not a creator thereof. Though I will file that away if Ruby needs a professional Colleague…
As it is, it’s not hugely pivotal to the story, but it’s the family business, so not just her 9 to 5 per se. But her main role in this story is as Peach’s mom.

(and I guess we won’t be seeing Berry Punch in this series either, winemaking notwithstanding).
Why do you say that? I don’t have any plans either way about her.

Beer brewer, clearly.
I have professionally brewed beer. Like, I have a job-related hat that says ‘Brewer’ even. Let me know if you’d like to hear the horror and grind parts of it. Beer itself is not different when you’ve made it professionally. If anything, beer is even MORE beer once you’ve done the 3-9 AM making it. But if you’ve made it professionally the how it is made becomes … an odd mix of science, wizardry, and farm work.
I did home brewing fairly extensively for a number of years, when I had a basement, and researched large scale brewing as a matter of interest, so I’m familiar with brewing in general. (Beer, not wine, though I have a friend who made wine)
So I would be quite interested in any anecdotes or stories you might have! Partly because they might be vaguely applicable to future stories, but mostly because that sounds potentially interesting. :)
wtf is going on with them
“Things”. They have “things” going on with them. The kind of things that lead to interesting fiction narratives when they aren’t real people being Karens on your art.
I’m lucky that, the one weird art-stalker aside, I don’t think I had much Karen-ing directed at my art. At least not where I can see, and I don’t think anyone posts my art anywhere else in any meaningful quantities…
Maybe I’ll know I’ve really Made It when I have people getting mad at me for my content? XD

unless anyone REALLY wants a picture of Adagio talking
There IS a lot of talking in this epsiode XD
I realized I’d probably be being a bad derpiboorian (to coin a REALLY clunky word) if I didn’t tag it.
Thank you, you have no idea how massively triggered some people can get over prosthetics.
I mean…I’ll do good tagging on principle, but if anyone gets bent out of shape about seeing a character with a prosthetic just going about their business…then they should really ask themselves why, and wtf is going on with them.
(for the record, in case I didn’t make it clear, it’s not going to be a fetishized element, won’t be focused on, and isn’t really a major part of his character. I just want to start having characters who have more differences of whatever sort)
(I actually did a fair amount of research for something that is actually not intended to be a major part of her character)
And kudos to you for that. It’s not something you needed to do but you did it anyway. That’s a sign of somebody who cares about their work, and it’s appreciated.
I mean…if I’m going to write about it, then I kinda DO need to do research about it. Otherwise I’ll write it wrong. But I appreciate you appreciating it. :)
Well, I was just talking about the whole plantigrade vs unguligrade locomotion thing, but ok. Hmm. Thinking about it, that would make a difference in prosthesis design, given how the joints are being used in different ways.
Fair. That is a big part of why I decided to make it below the hock just to simplify everything.
Oh…oh wow. Things are getting “meet the parents” serious.
Literally!

It’s not a matter of size per se. They do custom size the things. But it can be an issue of the anatomical structure, as well as the nature of whatever happened to require the bit to come off in the first place.
Bone is strong in compression, weaker in tension, and quite weak in shear. So yeah, you’d want the prosthesis to be positioned where all the force is compression.
And I’ve also been researching viticulture and winemaking a fair bit for this episode as well!

Don’t prosthetics have to fit whatever the patient has left? I mean, I can’t see a doctor saying “Looks like you’re a bit too long for a size nine, we’ll just have to take half an inch off the bottom.”
It’s not quite as simple as that, but the short version is that they kinda do, actually. There are many reasons why whatever you have might not be suitable for interfacing with a prosthetic and supporting you, especially with a leg, so they do actually sometimes take off more. One person I was following for research actually had issues that meant they had to go back some time later to have more taken off.
It’s not a matter of size per se. They do custom size the things. But it can be an issue of the anatomical structure, as well as the nature of whatever happened to require the bit to come off in the first place.
I mean, think about it…if you have to choose between having no foot and a few inches more useless leg, or STILL having no foot, a few inches LESS useless leg, and a prosthesis that fits and works vastly better, what would you pick?
(For the record, I’m not going to be getting into all of this nitty gritty in the story. It’s not going to be a major plot point or a huge or defining part of her character. But by doing a moderately deep research dive behind the scenes, I’m trying to ensure that I don’t get stuff wrong in passing.)
I actually often do a lot of research that isn’t explicitly shown. I learned a fair amount about skateboards just for one single pic I did of Scootaloo a while back. And I’ve also been researching viticulture and winemaking a fair bit for this episode as well!

Though on a human, the actual cut can be in a wide range of places. In her case I put it where it made sense with the leg anatomy of my models, in terms of where she could balance on it without putting a lot of torsion on the bone. (I actually did a fair amount of research for something that is actually not intended to be a major part of her character)
