Also, I’m sure the Mare Do Well that saved the balloon in TMMDW was either Pinkie Pie or Applejack (Twilight was present with the other ponies). I was quite glad to see that an earth pony could best the flying of a pegasus with jumps.

And on top of that, Applejack and Pinkie will shout, “FOR THE PRESERVATION OF OUR BLUE AND PURE WORLD!” and launch nukes at Canterlot.

The secondary tribal characteristic of Earth Ponies– aside from “Try feedin’ yourselves for a while, pointyheads and birdhorses”– is clearly “able to do a lot of different things that don’t necessarily relate to their cutie mark power”. They’re generalists, which in a society of people who are literally hidebound to their professions, makes them automatically the most useful members of any commmunity. Really, only Rarity and Fluttershy have shown any significant non-buttdestiny-related abilities among the other tribes, and Flootershai’s “freaky knowledge of sewing” is both labeled as “freaky” and only used once in the show for a throwaway gag and in her (awesome) micro in the IDW comics.
 
How many of those “Unicorn Master Race” jackasses can play ten instruments at once while they predict the future and bake cupcakes and run faster than RD can fly and break the fourth wall and talk to oatmeal and start a range war with a terrible song and make an entire town march in a flash parade with a great song? Fuckers’ll be back when they get hungry.

To put it simply, now this isn’t even headcanon, given the fact that the only really successful societies over human history have generally been the ones with the fewest hungry people…compared to the Earth ponies, the other two races occupied layers of the social strata that seemed obsolete, unsustainable and exploitative.

You guys do realize it’s a statement on the lines of the earth ponies being overpowered and lacking identifying skills, rather than actual hatred of the earth pony characters, right? This has kinda been made even more extreme with Twilight going alicorn. Does it really matter that they are earth ponies? No, it doesn’t, and it’s part of the show’s theme. But it’s very nasty fridge logic, if you’ll forgive the term.
 
The relative powerlessness of earth ponies is an ancient debate since S1 and will not only continue to exist but will likely be revisited this season as it briefly was in HWE. Subtleties aside, pegasi were basically powerful earth ponies with wings (as RD’s owning of Applejack merely by virtue of having wings despite AJ’s otherwise equal athletic skill very conspicuously illustrated) and unicorns were essentially earth ponies who can use magic. Oh, but earth ponies are physically stronger and more muscular? Blueblood, Shining Armor, much of the Royal Guard, and possibly even Rarity would like a word with you. Meanwhile, earth ponies were, well, earth ponies and were stuck on the ground living in plainer quarters. Maybe it’s just me, but I believe they are the most rarely seen doing creative, non-menial work.
 
That said, his is actually something that has improved since S1, with earth ponies finally gaining an important niche (providers of food) that defends their relatively humble rural lifestyle. I mean it’s not like the others can enjoy such an intimate connection with nature while shining at her own race’s skill when the plot calls for it….
