So she did earn it in the sense of qualifying to be a princess by fulfilling whichever metrics are used to gauge that, but is it something she really achieved of her own volition?

Again, mental illness.

I always stumble when it comes to the “princesshood must be earned” statement. I know the producers and writers are touting that Twilight earned her new status as opposed to birth, yet she never expressed an interest.
 
Celestia guided her towards it. So can we really say that Twilight “earned” something she never wanted?
 
I don’t mean this as an anti-Twilacorn rant. I do think she has qualities that justify the title and wings, yet the contradiction has bothered me.
