I love how you two have been going back and forth about the Ceestia/Twilight relationship in a Spike/Twilight image… especially since everything you’ve both said about Celestia and Twilight’s relationship could be applied to Spike and Twilight’s relationship.
 
Does Twilight treat Spike the way that she does because seeing him reminds her that she never really had a childhood? With or without raising him, she was bookish and introverted. He is an avatar for her responsibilities.
 
Spike, on the other hand, attempts to please Twilight and be there for her. She reciprocates with love and affection at times, but at other times she merely treats him as an employee, or is even violent with him. No wonder he’s snarky and sarcastic… his life has taught him that it’s the only way he has to deal with Twilight’s ever-changing states and view of him.

I agree that she’s not incredibly wise but perhaps she is aware of this weakness. Twilight is more astute than Celestia and it stands to reason that Celestia recognizes this and is slowly cultivating her to be her successor when she ultimately decides to retire from her royal duties.

At the same time, she’s not nearly as wise as she thinks she is. So she never ends up being that cold.

So you believe Celestia is being, at least in part, manipulative in order to fulfill her political aspirations? That’s pretty cold and calculated for a sun goddess.

She’s putty in Celestia’s hoof. Celestia is a politician first, just one that happens to be motherly. I have a hard time believing it’s all genuine.

Twilight seems to think so, and that’s probably not a good thing.

She does, but she’s rather emotionally distant for a wannabe mother. Twilight is very passionate in expressing her love for her princess mother but Celestia doesn’t seem to exactly reciprocate that love to an identical degree. Sure she’s proud of Twilight, but does she truly love her like a mother loves her daughter?

I wouldn’t be surprised if they were on the same level. Celestia clearly wants to be like a mother to her.

This is true, she’s always loved Celestia, so much so that it also makes you wonder if Twilight loves Celestia more than her own biological mother.

She’s too far gone to think like that. She’s been putty in Celestia’s hooves long before she even came to Ponyville.
 
But I too would wonder if she’s ever thought of it, even in passing.

Hmm, you’re probably right about Spike.  
So, had she not been crazy about books, she wouldn’t have the success she has now. She owes her current success to her alienating obsessive study habits despite it costing her the precious young years of her life she’ll never get back. I wonder if she thinks “was it worth it?”

You know what, maybe no one person truly raised Spike.
 
Maybe he was just a curious, temperamental addition to the castle before he matured enough to be put to work as Twilight’s assistant.

Uh, wasn’t Spike raised by Celestia? And besides, she lost her fillyhood spending all of her time inside reading books instead of making friends.

I feel bad for Twi. She had to mature so quickly just to take care of baby Spike that she probably missed out on her own fillyhood.

That’s what you get for leaving open books around a baby dragon.

I don’t know the context, but I like to think she just spent hours of searching through a book city to find Spike and she is overjoyed to see her search is over.
