The whole “chin scene” with Applebloom in the newest episode was just as shippy as these two dancing next to each other. Plus, he knows Applebloom’s sister, and has actually hung out at the Applefarm before. I just thing Spikebloom is just as plausible as Spikebelle, without all of the unfortunate implications Spikebelle carries with it.

If we’re going by the “we don’t know how dragons age” argument (which is a valid point), then he might as well NOT be too young for Rarity. The dragon aging thing is a total wildcard. However, with Megan having stated that he’s a kid while she’s a grownup, it kinda goes without saying that despite his age not being exact, he IS young enough to be considered on a whole different age group to the Mane6.
Him being too old for Sweetie however, while possible, is very unlikely by this point.
That’s also because of Megan confirming he’s “a little boy”. A little boy with a little girl who “might be a bit younger than him” is much more “appropiate” (something they HAVE to consider whether we like it or not), than a little boy with an adult woman. Note that Im not trying to defend Spike/Sweetie as a shipper here, I just think that unlike Sparity, it does have a chance at becoming canon.
The “I can’t have Rarity. I’ll go after her little sister” thing”, depends entirely on how they handle it, and most people who actually spared a second to think about the possibility know it very well. Sure, if Spike gets rejected by Rarity and seeks Sweetiebelle right away, then it would look weird. But that’s not the only way they can go about it.
Heck, he doesn’t even need to be the one to seek the other out.
However, the Rarity thing is precisely the reason why I see Sweetie as a more plausible candidate than AB or Scoots (though not by much). With those two, it would feel too “out of nowhere”, while with Sweetie there IS the thing about him having a crush on her sister, automatically creating a connection between the characters from a writing point of view. I admit, though, that it would work better if they show Sweetie having a crush on Spike since before Rarity rejects him.
That, and their little dance on Canterlot Wedding.
And before you anything about how little a scene it was, please remember that lots of ships in this fandom started out with much, much less shipping fuel than that.

Probably because they’ve shared like two actual scenes together. Y’know that and the whole “I can’t have Rarity. I’ll go after her little sister” thing. Also, we don’t know everyone’s age. Spike may be too young for Rarity, yet too old for Sweetie. Hell, he might be too young for Sweetie. We don’t know how dragons age.
Also, how is SweetieSpike any more plausible than SpikeBloom or ScootaSpike? He’s had about as much interaction with her as the other CMC. Which is like, little to none.
I really wonder why this ship isn’t more popular.
From the way most people reacted when “that” happened a few days ago, it seems the ship’s actual chances of becoming canon are very important to some people…and from all of Spike’s ships, this is really the only one with a good chance of becoming so.
Er… this is the same animation I put on tumblr yesterday. Just that it’s now on deviantArt. I don’t know if that matters or if it’s considered a duplicate on derpibooru.
I still say the best thing would be to have Sweetie Belle develop a crush on Spike while he’s still crushing on Rarity. That’s comedy gold right there!
