In Japan, they’re actually not even called “Koopas,” the only one called “Koopa” there is the villain. (He’s only known as “Bowser” outside of Japan. Much like the Robotnik/Eggman & Princess Toadstool/Peach renaming confusion.)
“Koopa” was never really considered their “race” there, it was just something NOA came up with when they mistranslated the villain’s name as “King of the Koopa,” when it should’ve been “King Koopa.”
@TyroneBiggums
Yes, but one character does not mean the whole race. Kappas, as I remember, are aquatic, or at least live in shallows. Do you actually face Wendy in water at any time?
@Blood Brandy
I think Bowser or King Koopa was intended to be a archetype fire breathing dragon. But somewhere in development Mr Miyamoto decided to make him a dragon turtle instead. Well looking up wikipedia, he was also inspired by the ox.
I think the spike shell Koopalings are basically dragons. Dragon turtles.
There’s three main types if Koopalings. The common turtle ones, the smooth shell Ines often associated with the hammer bros, and the spike shell ones who appear to be the highest tier Koopalings in Koopa society. Members include Bowser, Koopa Kids, and Boom Boom from smb3.

I meant in SMRPG… The castle theme is different from the one from SMB3. Except for the second time you visit Bowser’s Keep (after the Smithy gang take it over) it has some musical cues from the SMB3 Bowser battle added.

Y’know, that moment from the game is so going to be taken out of context by those who never played “Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars.”
It’s a shame that’s the only RPG Mario title that never got a sequel. Even when Square/Enix helped make a few sports Mario games later, (for DS & Wii) they didn’t even have any references/characters from SMRPG in ‘em.
Only times SMRPG has been referenced was some of the story similarities in the first “Paper Mario” N64 game, the Geno cameo in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, (and the Mario’s house theme) and possibly Princess Peach’s frying pan weapon in the SSB series. (Which was her strongest weapon in SMRPG. Unless it’s referencing the “Chef” game in “Game & Watch Gallery 2 & 4”)

Hip/Lemmy, and Hop/Iggy were indeed Tara Strong. (Credited back then as “Tara Charrondoff.”)
Wendy/Kootie-Pie Koopa was Rarity. (Tabith St. Germain, but credited as her alias “Paulina Gillis” back then. She also voiced the fairy Sprite in the Zelda cartoon.)
