Its not as if its mere fanon subtext or interpretation anymore, subtle OR otherwise…not since the most recent movie. Rainbow Rocks was written by Meghan herself, and the whole movie was filled with showing the puppet-like weakness in Twilight’s title and her personality.
 
One of the main points they made through the film was that her title and her excessive importance as a princess was in the long run meaningless. I mean not many fans missed the part where she had crawled into a corner because she couldn’t accept reality. I mean if the writers themselves are expressing doubt in a character, why shouldn’t the fans?

This is why I’ve been distant from the fandom. Some people have a bad habit of taking things too seriously in a show like this.

If I could choose between Twilight being a puppet princess or a free-minded wizard, I would choose free-minded wizard anyday. The whole theme of denial in S4 was to show Twilight couldn’t be a free minded princess, all leading up to her mental breakdown in Rainbow Rocks.
 
If Sunset was to become a shimmercorn, it would only be so she needed the power and was most deserving of it. Applejack and Rainbow Dash provide common sense and strong morals to the group, but that hardly becomes a factor once Twilight stops listening and lets Celestia puppet her around.
 
Despite the misgivings I have with Twilight’s character, I’d rather her get her own life and grow a spine then fade into the background. Have her maybe meet her alternate and have a revelation or something; Let her go back to what makes Twilight Sparkle ‘Twilight Sparkle’, not ‘Celestia’s #1 student’. I mean she has to have some individuality left in her….right?

What makes you think Sunset still wants that? That was the old Sunset, the one who craved power above all else. Then the Mane Six put her in a crater with a giant rainbow laser of friendship, and when she came out, she had changed. The realization that her quest for power literally turned her into the bitch from hell probably helped her see the light too.
 
I don’t think she’s going to want power again any time soon. Not after what happened last time she tried to claim it.

Having the Princess of friendship fade into the background after becoming the princess of friendship kind of defeats the point, doesn’t it? A more supporting regular role could work, but fading into the background kind of defeats the whole friendship aspect at this point.

Given my opinion of the characters, I’d personally love for Sunset to take Twilight’s place amongst the Mane Six, and let Twi retreat into the background doing princess things like Celestia wants.
 
Ideally, Sunset would function best as a counterweight to the entire narrative conceit of the series. It was implied in RR that Sunset may actually be smarter than Twilight. She is the only character in the entire series who could really understand Twily, since they both studied directly under Celestia. That also means Sunset could call Twi out on her critical flaw: that Twilight values Celestia’s approval above literally everything else. Currently, Applejack is the team’s voice of reason, but Twilight often ignores her if the situation involves anything magic or Celestia. Sunset has valuable experience in both.

Honestly that would annoy me to no end. Sunset deserves better than having to be subordinate to her younger replacement. Twilight may have been Alicornicated into a Princess, but what little we’ve seen of Sunset suggests she’s got more than a few things she could teach Twilight. I could, however, see Sunset eventually returning and reconciling with Celestia. Maybe not becoming Sunbutt’s student again, but perhaps Luna could take on a pupil or two? (Trixie needs more attention)
 
I have no problem with Sunset becoming friends with Twilight and Sunny going to her for advice sometimes (although AJ would be better at most of the friendship stuff), but making it a teacher-student dynamic is too much.
 
Ultimately, like Sunset herself, I want Shimmercorn to happen, dammit!

I’d say some sort of special with her being brought in as backup against a new threat, but mostly to have scene reconciling with Celestia, hell maybe make it like there is a traitor in the palace most think its her, except for Twilight and even after awhile Celestia comes around too, finally trusting her again.

She’d make a good drifter, too, if they needed somepony to fill the role. Travels Equestria and solves problems, that kinda thing.

It would be nice to see Twilight read Sunset’s book every now and then in Season 5 to show that’s still a plot point.

I know this is a silly point, but the undershirt in this scene isn’t an error. That’s her “Rainbooms” “costume”. It’s a different shirt than the one she wears through most of the movie, you can tell by the collar itself.
