@Esteban
Yes, also there was that Hearts and Hooves Day episode where all three of the CMC actively tried to set up Big Mac with Cheerilee. I doubt Bloomie would be jealous of Big Mac spending time with another mare given she took part in that escapade. xD
Oh certainly, I never quote Freud for any reason (not that I’ve ever had a reason for doing so anyway lol). I always got the feeling that all his work is considered out-of-date and out-of-touch, too…
As much as this meme is popular in the fandom, i really doubt Applebloom would be jealous of Big Mac. Actually i think she would want him to be happily married.
Cheerile would be a good match, she knows Applebloom well. But Marble would also finish the arc about “Apple/Pie” families joined together as one big family. So either of them would be fine.
@LuminoZero
Is this really something that’s natural for all children going through that age band, to be obsessively possessive of the opposite-sex parent and consider the same-sex parent as a “rival”? Because nope, I was never possessive of my mum or viewed my dad as any kind of a rival. And the same in reverse was never true for my sister either.
I’d feel like calling “bull” on that theory but I’m the first to admit that the only two things I know about psychology are: diddly and squat. :P
@LuminoZero
I’m taking psychology, and we go over Freud. His theories usually involves sex and/or the penis, including the complexes you mentioned. Most likely, it was edited later to only involve attraction, and removing the sexual desire, which is likely due to reproduction reasons, more so of desiring the attention of the opposite sex, mostly from an older audience during a young age, and to surpass the same sex, and the sexual part appears after puberty. Also, the Electra Complex was made after Freud, since he only saw boys worthy enough to have complexes.
Wow, you overly simplified that to such a degree it’s not even the same concept anymore.
While the complex is named after the mythological figure who was famous for that, yes, the fact of it is far more mundane. A child will generate possessive desires towards their opposite gendered parent and, at the same time, start to view their same gendered parent as a ‘rival’. In a situation where one of those parents are absent, another suitable figure in their life is selected.
This is not a ‘crackpot’ theory, this is an observable part of child development that all children go through naturally. If you’ve worked with children between 2-6 years, you’ve seen it.
@LuminoZero
You are aware that that complex usually involves wanting to fuck the opposite sex parent and killing the same sex one, who are Big Mac and AJ in your version. Also, never quote Freud. Most of his ideas are sexist and hold little water. Also, this is more of “Not mah big brother” than “That biyay!”
@Meanlucario
You know sibling jealousy can be perfectly PG, especially in a family without parents, right?
Big Mac is the only appropriately aged male in Apple Blooms life which, from a psychological standpoint, means he was likely the target of her Oedipus/Electra Complex (a perfectly natural part of growing up). It’s quite common to see children with a single parent get jealous when that parent starts dating or showing an interest in other partners.
Considering AB’s non-standard family life, I’d say a little jealousy is perfectly normal.

Except Mac carries around a backpack and eats in the cafeteria with the other students. That would just be creepy if he wasn’t a student.
@SmokySkies
It seemed to me that Shining Armor had already graduated, as implied by Dean Cadance referring to him as alumni. It wouldn’t be much of a stretch for Big Macintosh being at the school just to deliver cider and help out.
@Background Pony #0BD4
That’s you shipping them. As I said, their interactions could be friendly or romantic, depending on how you want to see it. As for Ma checking her flank, they were teens, so of course he would check that ass. They might even have dated, it’s the outcome of that date that where things aren’t clear, if there was a date at all.
@Background Pony #0BD4
Well, there is not much of a age difference.
Remember human Shining Armor is probably dating his dean.
And it’s not forbidden everywhere.
@Meanlucario
They were always shipped by animators after that episode. Even in the last season, young talkative Big Mac was checking out young Cheerilee in the flashback episode. Cheerilee would have more sense than Marble, anyway. Big Mac isn’t a shy introvert as was established in that episode so he would to socialise with a takative pony teacher.
@Background Pony #0BD4
You do know that there wasn’t any build up anyway, right? One episode of them under a love poison, and a few gags with each other that can either be genuine or inside jokes.
