yes, that’s essentially the point of there being two words for it, but for example, there are casual viewers of things and there are fans of the same thing. It doesn’t take much to be a fan of something, but most people are casuals by default unless something else defines them as showing greater interest in one particular thing than they would another.  
Therefore, Liking it isn’t quite enough for some stranger on the internet to label someone else as a brony for them.
 
 
but on this other point about Trekkies, I’m about to go on a fucking tangent here, because you are reinforcing a stereotype right now and you are doing it very hard.

does that not sound familiar at all, that similarity of being considered weird for being considered obsessed with a show you like and admire? Trekkies come in all walks of life, as they’re all just simply fans of the show, There is no Master Race mentality about it, although there is debate and such about what type of a fan you are because of what I assume is a popular consensus the world threw at them, something that we thankfully avoided without having to call Bronies the hardcore elite and maybe alter the name for the more light fanbase as Broners, or something.
 
the thing is, we have a lot more in common with the Star Trek fanbase than we’d like to admit and if that hurts you, too bad, we have just as many insane people here as they have hardcore devotees and that has gained us a very well known stereotype of a brony, just like they got theirs..

Yes, the word comes from fanatic in terms of its origin, but it’s taken on a much smaller meaning that pretty much applies to liking anything now. Is English your first language? If not the confusion is understandable, but the much lighter definition is how fan is usually used.
 
Also, I didn’t say I assume all Trekkies are obsessive, I was just telling you the type of people that term is used for. There’s a difference between a “fan of Star Trek” and a Trekkie. (And when did I say that a lot of Bronies aren’t obsessive about MLP? They are, I just think the label is also used a lot for the more casual fans.)

the literal definition of fans comes off from the word Fanaticism, or Fanatic, because both behaviors display similarities to one another, albeit one is a lot more healthy than the other, for the most part anyway.
 
and lastly, a trekkie.. They’re called that because they’re fans of Star Trek, a trekkie is by definition a fan of Star Trek.  
Nice of you also to assume they’re all obsessive btw, something we definitely don’t share with them in the large majority of our fanbase.

Trekkie is a slightly different example as that word is more used for the obsessive fans than the casual watchers. I think Brony is more loose than that.

Yeah, haters always claim bronies are the ones who try to control, or attack others who don’t like the show, (not going to deny a few do that) yet I always see lots of haters who spaz out if they so much as see one pony pic turn up on Google search, or attack those just for liking it, or “joining the herd,” or in this case trying to “thought-police” somebody on how they should go about the show.
 
I really can’t stand nobodies on the internet trying to tell you what to like/not like, and such like that.
 
I think people forget being a “fanatical-pony-hater,” makes you no better then a “fanatical-pony-fan.” Both sides have their extremes. It’s not a “black & white” issue, it’s just pony.

This is less a fitting response to a non-brony but more a fitting response to some fuckhead who thinks he can control what you say.

I don’t know, I’ve taken heat for being a “Sonic fan” before, because people think if you like so much as one Sonic game, or TV show, then that means you’re somehow as crazy as Chris Chan. (Whom got in trouble recently for defacing “Sonic Boom” promotional stands in stores, and assaulted a store employee with mace, while dressed in drag. That would be hard to out-crazy.)
 
Some other fans of other things get hated/stereotyped to. (Just look at anime-fans, furry-fans, and such.) It’s the internet, practically every group of people is hated here.
