I’ve actually got a theory about their bitchiness.  
The Siren Pendants had minds of their own, and caused the three to be all meanies to perpetuate their own existence. Maybe they were souls trapped in the pendants by Starswirl, which then latched onto the Sirens.  
You can see, at the end of the movie, when the pendants are destroyed, the Sirens look sad and regretful, as if they didn’t want to do what they did. However, Sonata – for whatever reason – was able to resist the pendants more than Adagio or Aria. That’s why she isn’t as mean in the movie.  
Maybe Aria was originally mean, as she seemed the worst of them all.  
It’s a crazy theory, but it’s just crazy enough to work.

I’ve only seen half of that movie. I saw it when I was young and I started crying because the mom was in the hospital.

Just a shard of her pendant left, Adagio wonder what to do with her life… Then, she found her new home.
