I think what they’re trying to say is, you can like Japanese stuff, just don’t worship Japan, and consider it a utopia when it isn’t. My Dad used to live there, and while it was a nice country, it’s no more “perfect” then every other country.
 
A li’l uninteresting note, Sonic actually isn’t very popular in Japan, compared to other game series. In fact, Sega intentionally wanted Sonic to be popular in America, and focus on that market, that’s why they made his colors red, white, and blue.

It’s extremely common to see otaku kids end up with this insane, idealized version of Japan in their heads. This usually leads first to high school and/or college Japanese classes, then to some attempt to go to Japan (often as an English teacher), and thence to disappointment as they discover that Japan is just a place with people in it, that the animes they loved are just as niche in their birthplace, and that rather than some techno-utopia, large portions of the country modernized into the late 80s/early 90s and stayed there.
 
Initial symptoms include vigorously promoting and defending Japan to random people on the internet. This is commonly mocked by using the phrase ‘Glorious Nippon’ as a sarcastic imitation of the weeabo in question’s speech and opinion of Japan.

Ok i must admit i kinda like japs but after reading some history and knowing how they used to act before/during WW2 (Yari Samurai, Honor, Bushido, Yada yada) and how they act now i can’t halp but think the radiation from those 2 atom bombs managed to somehow mess with the heads of an entire nation.

Okay I may have went overboard with that “culture” statement, But I’m not a weeaboo. What even IS that? I just have high respect for Japan. That’s all. I’m not Racist in the slightest, Hell.. I hate people who’re racist. I also have no clue what you were talking about when you mentioned “magical superior fairyland glorious Nippon”.

A very racist place, which modernized in the late 80s and stayed there, more or less. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve enjoyed the hell out of some animes, but “Japan has surpassed the US in culture!”…

I may not know much about Vocaloid, But I obviously know a lot more about Sonic than you. And I know that they’re both extremely famous. I have a lot of respect for the Japanese for what they’ve done for us in the past. They’ve given us Anime, Video Games, Manga, and a lot more. They’ve surpassed The USA in Media and Culture. You can hate them all you want but here’s my message to you in their language: 彼らは痛くもかゆくもない!

I don’t get the downvotes for sonic. he’s not that bad. I actually like him. Not because of nostalgia either [I was bad at the games myself] but because he’s a good character.
