Smooze. Is. anti-magic. It is that simple. It doesn’t matter how magically powerful you are. It makes no difference if your magical capabilities are multiplied by zero.

Yeah, but I gave it some more thought, and I don’t think Celestia was even trying to stop the Smooze anyway. She was having too much fun, but had to maintain her ruse that the antics that Discord and the Smooze were causing were discomforting her as much as Twilight and the other guests.
If she had not tried to stop the Smooze, Twilight would’ve suspected that Celestia wanted this to happen and blown her cover with how much she was enjoying what Discord and the Smooze were doing to liven up the Gala.

people only want to be right and forget to be happy, they seem to think Celestia is a god, she’s clearly not a god, a demi-goddess maybe but even they can be afflicted by mortal problems, and every time someone calls Discord a god and not a spirit, I go nuts

This, right here. Snooze is immune to magic. Celestia is powerful, but she still uses the same magic that follows the same rules as everypony else.

You both make a good point. Since Celestia invited Discord in the first place, she was probably playing along with everything that happened. Even being soaked to the roots in Smooze slime did not bother her deep down. She was just playing along to convince Twilight that she was also annoyed and angry at Discord for the chaos he had wrought and discomfort he had caused her, and thus why at the end, once she was cleaned up and able to enjoy the party again, she reveals that she actually enjoyed it, leaving Twilight confused and amazed.
If Celestia could have used her full, immortal Alicorn magic on the Smooze, he would not even exist anymore.
Still, I am getting fed up with how Celestia always seems to end up taking the brunt of the Worf effect against the bad guys…

Hey, it would have been a crime to rob him of such a valuable lesson. If you get to have fun AND learn something with almost no possible chance of being in actual danger, then why not?
Also, the Gala is confirmed as a ‘making appearances’ event, aka ‘make sure the elite have something refined so they can rub elbows with Her Highness’. It’s just a social event, which yes, Celestia finds boring but necessary. Anybody that can bring life to it is probably quite welcome.
I’m sure if ponies were in actual danger she would have actually tried to do something… though since the smooze is made of anti-magic, I’m actually not sure what.
She might have learned that if she has a problem, she should be proactive in fixing it. Instead she spent 1000 years planning a party she would find boring, in a city where she could get whatever she wanted, then complains that it’s boring.
Yo, Celestia was faking it because she knew the Smooze was a chill dude and wouldn’t actually hurt anyone. Also, the Galas are probably extremely boring otherwise, hence why she likes when they get completely insane. Stopping the Smooze would have been boring and nobody would have learned anything.

It’s a work of fiction. There is no “can’t be done”. Specially when the problem I mention happens so that Celestia makes way for another character to solve the problem and in two occasions, off the top of my head, it’s not the main characters solving the problem. Canterlot Wedding and this last episode.
Come on. If Canterlot Wedding was a fanfiction people would have hated it. Characters out of the blue, one related to the main character and the other an alicorn. New villain that overpowers “the mighty Celestia” so that she can be defeated by the new characters… I think the same thing almost applies to this last episode. Guys can do better than this.
I’m not saying that I think Celestia should have wiped the floor with Chrysalis or should have dealt with Smooze. All I’m saying is that there are better ways of dealing with these situations when writing the story. Celestia didn’t even need to be in this episode. She wouldn’t be missed at all. All of that was unnecessary and served only to clutter the episode.
But Luna can be useful and so can Cadance without needing flashbacks. I can’t understand why is it that Celestia gets this treatment. And correct me if I’m wrong, but those flashbacks… Two are a rushed mess and the other is Celestia telling Twilight something. Again, I’m not asking that Celestia solve the problem. All I ask is that instead of using her so the audience can see how powerful this enemy is, or downright nullifying her so that the episode can happen, use her as an active part of the solution.
TL;DR: All I want, and I believe so do you, is to see what is it that Celestia is supposed to be doing when she is not maneuvering to screw up parties because she is bored. The same way I saw Luna and Cadance (and Twilight) doing their thing. That way, when she IS being Trollestia or someone is wiping the floor with her, I can think that this is not the normal.
And once again, we have ANOTHER shining example of how it is the writers have no idea how to write Princess Celestia. At least we COULD say at the end of it all, perhaps she was faking it since the admitted at the end she invited Discord and was probably aware of this, but then again it won’t stop people from making fun of her calling her out as useless since there is nothing that anyone can think of for her.
People always forget that even in the past most of the badass things Celestia did, she did with the Elements, not on her own. People paint a picture of her as if she was able to solve every problem and then get antsy when she can’t, but the show never said she could.

The comics played all that up to brilliant comedic effect by having Luna try to take over Day Shift duties temporarily; it could certainly be done well if it were played as a farce or screwball comedy of errors. Played straight? Nnnope. Even in a nation of herbivores, I don’t really want to see how the sausage is made.

She’s suffering pretty hard from Peacetime Military syndrome in addition to being pushed to the back by the main characters; who knows how many wars she fought and enemy nations she defeated in the thousand years it took to build the peaceful Equestria of S1E01, but we don’t have their History books so we don’t get to see it. I really do wish they’d do more with that.
