Actually, I hated her more for startling Granny Smith. Maybe it was because I had lost my own grandma less than half a year before seeing this episode, but you don’t startle the elderly. Don’t care what your society is.

Thank you for saying that. Took you long enough to finally see Gilda in a way some of us always saw her. Sure, wen didn’t know anything about her home, but we always saw that Gilda feared to lose one of her best friends (after the episode we know that Dash even was her first and maybe only friend) and acted like a b*tch because of being afraid of being alone again.  
I guess most people only hated her because she made Fluttershy cry. After that, they never tried to see the episode from Gilda’s view. Maybe Gilda now gets more fans:-)

Her society isn’t the only problem. What was the first experience she had with ponies? The sports bastards mocking her because she didn’t fly. Seeing Gilda as…well…basically, Fluttershy when she was younger was a little jarring and, given her society, made a lot of sense.
 
By the way, I don’t want an entire episode or anything like that revolving around Gilda trying to get forgiveness from Fluttershy and the others. I want a scene. One where Gilda, still unused to being friendly, tries to apologize, stumbling around the words, only for Fluttershy–having gotten the full story from Rainbow and Pinkie, and being made of (somewhat) sterner stuff since their incident–just hugs her (think Avatar: Last Airbender, when Zuko apologizes to Iroh in the third book).
 
…after which, Rainbow, Fluttershy, and Gilda go beat the crap out of the Sports Trio, to get over their childhood trauma. Happy Ending!

Rainbow Dash is an awfully poor host, then.

Wanna know the real kicker? The previous episode gave us exactly the reason why Gilda was so rude and angry with Pinkie way back in Season 1. In fact both Gilda and Discord last ep shared so much in common.
 
Both Discord and Gilda had no friends in their lives. Discord being a villain and god of chaos. Gilda being dirt poor and stuck in a dump with surly greedy griffons.
 
Their first friends were ponies that stood up for them. Discord with Fluttershy and Gilda with Dash. Both formed deep bonds with them as they were their very first friends period.
 
Both took their friendships with those ponies as to put them on a pedestal. Therefore whenever anyone comes into the picture to, in their own minds, take them away (Pinkie Pie & Tree Hugger respectively), they act out of pure jealousy. Since they don’t have any other “special friends”, they act in a very protective sense.
 
The differences of course is that Discord was reformed much more earlier so some of his malice was absent while Gilda was forced to return to her ghetto where she was further molded into jerkassery and cynicism surrounded by the other griffons. Discord acted in a passive-agressive, “I’m better than you” attitude while Gilda simply was mean-spirited and rude. Not to mention when Fluttershy stood up to Discord for not accepting Tree Hugger, she basically chided him like a mother does to a child.
 
When Dash stood up to Gilda for not accepting Pinkie, she wasn’t as motherly and flat-out told her off given her tough attitude. To Gilda that was an ultimate betrayal and broke her in many ways. Naturally she maintained her cool and pride around the ponies, but I can only imagine once she got home she broke down in tears losing Dash followed by angrily destroying her room, cursing Dash.

Your both right. Gilda does come from gilded, but the Italians get the name Gilda from the word gild meaning sacrifice or value (that’s were gold comes in)
