To be fair, the sheer amount of time Cranky had to go without being able to see Matilda and doing everything he could to find her is legit heartbreaking.

Well he was well known enough to get into the gala and he did spend a large chunk of his life adventuring as he searched for Matilda, so connections abound as hinted by Steve.
