Fluttershy’s proposed design looks more like the outfits Rarity made than Fluttershy’s dress which she called “exactly what I wanted”. Or did she suddenly become good at pretending to like something? It makes zero sense that Rarity would want to make it that way. But do remember the song points out they are very indecisive about what they want, so even if Fluttershy proposed that design it’s more likely she asked for the nest added than for Rarity to suddenly go “You know what would look really fashionable? A fu**ing nest on your head.”

That’s an assumption. It’s not entirely unreasonable to think that, but the fact that Fluttershy’s proposed design is so different from the final product throws a wrench into any certainty you want to have about it.

The entire point of the second part of the song was that Rarity was being pressured to do exactly what the other five wanted, to the detriment of the dresses. Even if it wasn’t shown onscreen, the bird’s nest final design came from Fluttershy.

Fluttershy’s design had no bird’s nest, and she was never shown asking for it. She sketched what she wanted, and what Rarity made looked nothing like it. Fluttershy probably just went with it because she was tired of telling Rarity to get it right.

Anyway, I’ll just write out my long response ahead of time because why not
 
Rarity followed Fluttershy’s dress per her own request, right down to her own request. People say that Fluttershy knows fashion more than Rarity because of that one bit, but everything stated in that episode was related to merely sewing and nothing to do with the aesthetics - it’s even stated at the end of the episode they got Rarity’s dress done because they followed Rarity’s design and used Fluttershy’s “freakish knowledge of sewing” to their advantage. So no, knowing how to sew =/= knowing fashion and Rarity did everything Fluttershy asked of her to a T. The argument can even be made that she did Fluttershy’s even more specifically because Fluttershy displayed a knowledge of sewing that none of her other friends possessed and Rarity would be able to follow Fluttershy’s directions even more concisely as a result due to a shared knowledge of the technicalities involved with making a dress.

I was so sure that she said so, but I can’t find it in the text of any of the episodes.
 
Rarity says that it is and presumably she would know, and in the “Hot Minute” short Pinkie answers the question for her favourite colour with, “… Is this a trick question?” But I was absolutely 100% convinced that I heard Pinkie say “It’s my favourite colour… PINK!” at some point, and I can’t find it anywhere.
