It’s not because of the controller, its how the game was program to control Mario in the game which are not smooth and any slipup will most likely cost you a life (falling off an edge and/or missing a door, running into a enemy, etc. I never played the game myself, but I did watch a review about it. Believe me, Hotel Mario is terrible. The only thing worthwhile are the cutscenes and the YouTube Poops.
 
Maybe one day a programmer can try their hands at remastering the game to make it better.
