Then we learned her real role, and it was right back to freaking out.

I remember when this figure of her popped up at a toy show, and along with her description on the package, people started freaking out that she was going to replace Twilight in the mane 6. I was worried myself a little bit. Here we had Twilight just get Alicorned, and a mysterious unicorn pops up who was described simply as another student of Celestia and “knows the way to a magical land”? Yeah, it looked like they might be planning to relegate Twilight to a non-active role, and Sunset Shimmer was her replacement.
 
Thankfully, that didn’t happen.
