Chrome hit a limit now getting videos/gifs is a chore

alidan

So, I try to download a video, and it brings up a filebrowser to save, this is new, it use to be one click and its done till now, for reference >>1513273 does it too. I generally save all gifs as videos now that I am given the option, some gifs are small and I will get them but many of obnoxiously large and I would rather go the video format over the gif.

So chrome gives me a small bar at the bottom with the far right option being to download it.

Great, the problem, previously it just saved and added a number to it. Full (1) to full (100) but with 101 I had to name it myself.

Looking into it, it seems chrome will only auto do 100 files like this before it demands I start doing it myself.

So, I have to ask, is there any interest in putting in a download option to download the video with a specific name or is this just something I have to get use to dealing with every 100 gifs?

How are you downloading them? Are you clicking the “Download” or “DLS” buttons at the top of the page?

just had to make sure, If I click either of those, they download the gif,
However there is an option
“Serve WebM”
that is giving me video files instead of the gifs, granted for the one I linked the video is broken due to timing, but most 20~mb gifs turn into 1-5mb videos for the most part, and I would much rather have them then the gif at that file size difference.
On the site as far as I can tell, and correct me if i’m wrong, the only way to save the gifs converted to videos is right click save as or lower right hand of the play bar download button. Every single one of them is named Full.mp4 though, apposed to the 2 names that are given under download or download short. Now I want to believe there is something in your end doing the conversion from gif to mp4 and right now it seems to only be saving the files as full.

The option at the top of the page to download the videos as either gif/mp4 and download full name or short would be nice.

If I enable “Serve WebM” on my account and go to the GIF you linked (or any other GIF), then click “Download” or “DS”, it downloads an appropriately named file (Image ID + Tags.gif / Image ID.gif), which is our supported way of saving files.

I’m not sure if the intent of serving gif files as WebMs is to allow download. I believe that’s just more of an optional bandwidth thing. I can ask about that though.

@Joey
Personally I would rather download many gifs as webm’s natively instead of converted because holy crap some of these gifs are stupidly large, and I cant justify 20+ mb for what they are, a webm would cut down the file size alot but many people are not converting natively to webm, so I go with this sites converter.

see this image as an example

I was just looking for the first 20+mb gif I could find.
Now at 20+mb, there is no way I would save it, but at a little over 5mb the decision isn’t hard. I would honestly say that if a gif is under 5 frames the decision is in the gifs favor, the moment it goes over that, its up in the air which I would chose, and the moment its over 5mb I heavily favor the video instead of the gif.

I may have 12tb of storage in my computer, but that also doesn’t mean I want to waste it, especially when there is very little visual difference.
