IDW Comics - Story Discussion (Spoilers)

The next issue is going to reveal that the Yaks are angry at the dragons over something completely stupid, isn’t it?
 
For that matter, why are the ponies helping the yaks fight the dragons? The dragons are their allies too now. Not to mention, well, they’re ponies. Shouldn’t they want to AVOID fighting?

Exactly, they’re BOTH allies, so shouldn’t the ponies be trying to STOP the conflict between them rather than help one side?

Yeah, I saw that.

Well, the prequel comic was a letdown. To be fair, it wasn’t terrible, but wasn’t good either and made me worry about the movie itself as it kind of spoiled the entire movie resolution. (Looks like everything will be solved by teaching Storm King about friendship, according to his “I never had a friend, never needed a friend” monologues.)

So, another “Outsider that doesn’t know about friendship” villain.
 
Yknow, I think I preferred the rainbow mindrape cannon at this point when it comes to using the same unoriginal plot device to solve conflicts, at least it gets straight to the point instead of giving us the illusion of originality…

Well, to be fair, you can kind of guess what the end result might be based on the kind of show it is and the way it has handled villains like him before. It’s not exactly a stretch of the imagination to think it might follow that path.
 
However, there are other options. He could just as easily continue to refuse friendship, and get beaten by the mane 6 and the members of his crew who have learned how powerful friendship is. Given how he treats Grubber, I could see a scenario where friendship with him causes him to betray the Storm King and help them win the day.

MLP badly needs another villain and Storm King isn’t bad for the role. He’s not interested in ruling the nations he conquers. He wants to conquer the world to show that he can. I kind of like that. He’s basically a pirate king.
 
I just wonder how closely the comics are going to match the movie.

If anything I think the criticism has lessened considerably over the last six months. I think the Legends of Magic and movie prequels have been pretty well-received.
 
Anyway, in this thread people are still interested enough in it to continue reading. That means they either find enough satisfying material and just post about what they don’t like, or they are horrible masochists.

My main inherent criticism of Legends of Magic is that Rockhoof, Flash Magnus/Prance, and Meadowbrook were all either implied or explicitly stated to be unicorns, and yet they are an earth pony, pegasus, and earth pony respectively. That and it contradicts the Journal with the one about Canterlot castle being built.
 
The movie prequels? Well, honestly the first one didn’t seem like Price at 100% but maybe he was just getting used to drawing the new characters. I can’t say until I see a prequel for the second one.
