The other issue with Discord is that he drags scenes out way too far with his theatrics before someone stops him. Since a recurring trait of his is coming in to ruin everyone else’s fun for leaving him out, it would be very fitting if the camera just… cut away from him and put his whining and pomp in the background while focusing on other characters trying to work around him.

That was my main beef with the Guys’ Night Out episode. Excellent in concept, but far too much waiting around for Discord to stop complaining.

Catch-Up Status: The Movie complete

This movie looks freaky. I remember the team said it was really hard to get ponies into smooth animation and it definitely looks off for everybody not explicitly designed for the movie - that is, Storm King, Tempest, etc. usually look just fine. Twilight’s eyes are massive. Most ponies seen from the front look really uncanny and goblin-esque, though the side views tend to look show-accurate. (The show itself kinda suffers from Bad Front Faces too, actually…)

Bird-lady is cute. The other birds are eh. I was really hoping Ceaeaelaaeaeeno would take off her hood and her hat would be right under it. Alas, I was disappointed.

The Storm King seems like they were trying to go for a Disney Hades vibe with him. I’m not sure on the success of it.

The movie feels like a bit of a grind as characters musically wander from one scene to the next, and Tempest spends most of her time being as ASMR as possible, but it picks up right after Twilight loses all her friends and the direction becomes more concrete. The scene where Twilight drops everybody feels like a bit of a stretch even for Twilight - I just don’t see her expressing a construction of the scene as anything but her fault, no matter how heated her temper was. It would have worked just fine if everybody had just been pissed enough with her (since she framed them all as thieves) to walk away and then Tempest could snag her instantly.

The cat guy is smooth, he rocks.

I saw a comment about the movie once claiming that Tempest’s song line “Don’t ever count on anybody else :: In this or any other land” was filler to meet rhyme and meter, but keep in mind it echoes the fact that Twilight literally JUST went TO ANOTHER LAND and BETRAYED the people there. Tempest’s immediate next scene after the song is to tell Twilight that friendship failed the both of them, and Twilight sadly corrects her that Twilight was the traitor in her case. So no, that line is not filler, it reflects the scenario, summarizes Tempest’s skewed perspective thereof, and signifies her foil relationship with Twilight.

The paper ponies in the credits sequence are cute (especially Celestia) and somebody needs to make animations completely in that paper style if there aren’t any already. I particularly like how Spike gnaws on bird-lady’s wood leg in one scene and the next time she appears she’s wearing bandages over that leg.

Finally, the two Requisite Movie Tropes that both suck: the Licensed Pop Singer has probably the worst songs in the show, and the Affable Unintimidating Minion is just kind of there and so far as I know never does anything worthwhile. Both were rather expected.

The movie overall is Quite Okay. The first half is a bit of a slog but the second half is better.

Just what I was waiting, the recent episode to start getting nitpicked on by overanalyzers, cause it just wouldn’t be the brony fandom if we didn’t have them.

It’s one thing when people do it in good fun- “hey wait a minute, that’s a little silly, isn’t it?” They still enjoy the episode, merely pointing out a minor writing flaw. That’s fine, I do it quite a bit and still love most of the episodes. What gets me is when people act like these small things ruin the show forever, but then keep watching so they can keep complaining. It’s really irritating.

I’ve been watching episodes too rapidly and I’m starting to burn out, so I’m gonna take a break and slow down for the next few days. I’ll be caught up to season 9 before it ends, though, that’s for sure.

SCHOOL DAZE: Gee, good thing I watched the movie they heavily reference the entire first half. New Rangers are here. They’re OK. Smolder looks and sounds like Scootaloo. Silverstream has a hormone imbalance. “Everypony” was bad enough, but now they’ve moved up to “every-creature” and that sounds incredibly unnatural (and mildly racist).

THE MAUD COUPLE: Screw this Sheldon Cooper pony I hate him and this episode is boring and dumb except for Pinkie’s “everything is a lie” meltdown

FAKE IT TIL YOU MAKE IT: Takes a little bit to get started. Fluttershy was an excellent seamstress and knew (some) fashion terms back in Suited for Success - she doesn’t seem to have kept any of this knowledge here. There’s some comedy to her rapid switching of characters but unfortunately it stops being interesting once she becomes Bitchshy yet again.

GRANNIES GONE WILD: The title is completely amazing. Anyway, Rainbow Dash has been living with this girl almost her whole dang life and plumb forgot that Applejack drives a hard bargain. The plot twist was kind of predictable and very undersold but otherwise it was OK.

SURF AND/OR TURF: I’m a bit burned out by these “misunderstanding the problem to begin with” episodes. You know, the ones where the audience knows the solution like 5 minutes in and has to wait for everybody else to figure it out… Otherwise, it’s OK. It wasn’t really very funny, though.

HORSE PLAY: On the one hand, I’ve found that the balance between Stoic Celestia and relaxed goofball Celestia in recent seasons is a bit off and should lean more towards the former so that the latter is more “out of character” (as in the public persona she forces herself to play) and thus funnier. On the other hand, Celestia making a complete and utter ass of herself and the implications that she suddenly forgets how to behave theatrically as soon as she perceives it as acting is astounding. The fatal flaw is that she never gets around to humiliating herself in front of Luna and co. I wish they had set it up so we see the entire 2~3 minute play done totally straight where everybody is doing great except Celestia who’s horrible, and the audience is just dumbfounded and silent until the end when Luna starts totally cackling so everyone follows, and then Twilight has to deal with the fallout, and Luna really wants to apologize and help but starts cracking up every time she comes near and has to excuse herself.

THE PARENT MAP: Another Geez Parents Suck episode. It’s OK. Cute MILF, that’s about it.

NON-COMPETE CLAUSE: Throwback to Applejack and Rainbow Dash being dumbasses like back in the old seasons. I don’t really like episodes where Applejack blatantly lies. It’s nice that Ocellus got two new forms for this one, though I think it’s weird that ONLY her seapony form doesn’t keep her regular eyes. PLEASE STOP SAYING “EVERY-CREATURE”. I REALLY HATE THAT.

THE BREAK UP BREAK DOWN: Before 30 seconds have passed, Spike is already screwing up. But the real jackass is once again Discord, who changes the episode from a simple and comical misunderstanding to yet another instance of him manipulating people into terrible ideas for entertainment and then pretending to be a great hero when he fixes the problem he himself created. Other than that, it’s charming. Big Macintosh has been doing a lot of talking this last season or two and it’s not quite as funny anymore.

MOLT DOWN: I unfortunately had this entire episode spoiled for me so I’m not really getting the full effect. I like everything about Rarity’s contribution to the episode and it’s kind of cute that Smolder sneaks over to tease-educate Spike.

MARKS FOR EFFORT: Again, I kind of already know Cozy Glow is hella evil which damages it a bit. Actually seeing the episode makes her ridiculous excuse for failing the test seem more plausible. The episode does a good job keeping her evil-ness subtle - her cutie mark isn’t given any extra attention, and she only slips up when she makes a devious face eyeballing the symbol of magic.

THE MEAN 6: Manages to make a good comedy episode out of a really insidious Chrysalis plot. Chrysalis’s own creations (which are very similar to the girls Discorded) don’t even respect her, and the girls never notice what’s actually going on, apparently accepting everything that happens as their regular insanity. The only real flaw is that the Tree of Harmony deus exes a good ending. (I suppose I’d better get used to that.)

A MATTER OF PRINCIPALS: Hey look, it’s Discord being a baby again and 20 minutes of haha random things happening.

THE HEARTHS WARMING CLUB: I think if I hadn’t known ahead of time that it was Gallus, I might have liked this one better. He has a good reason though, poor lonely orphan griff. We get Loose-Hair Yona. Sandbar is extremely un-funny this episode.

FRIENDSHIP UNIVERSITY: I love the idea of pompous asshole Star Swirl in a semi-submissive child role in new society, right down to being nervous that his art sucks. The situation mostly effectively disarms Twilight as she not only has no submissible evidence that Flim & Flam are doing anything wrong, but would have to go back on her word to try to convince Star Swirl to ditch them. I like how Twilight correctly predicts her awful disguise won’t work, and that Rarity’s does because Flim & Flam don’t know who she is to begin with.

THE END IN FRIEND: Forces Rarity and Rainbow Dash, possibly the least compatible two out of the six, to better appreciate each other. It’s Very Cute.

YAKITY-SAX: Kind of surprised nobody has mistaken Pinkie’s various noises for a dying animal before now. It’s Kind Of Cute.

ON THE ROAD TO FRIENDSHIP: Granny Smith is best completely unwitting assistant. Otherwise it’s kind of OK. Trixie talking in her sleep is super-adorable (unless you are Starlight.) I like how the smoke bombs go off constantly.

THE WASHOUTS: The bitch is back and she has elevated herself to Super Bitch status. I like any episode where Rainbow Dash has to admit the thing she hates is cool, and I like Spitfire going insane on a kid. These recent seasons have paid way more attention to the Rainbow / Scoots love and it’s Very Cute.

A ROCKHOOF AND A HARD PLACE: It’s hilarious how every other hero just sort of gets a Real Job and melts into a society that’s just like “Oh, cool! Yeah we’ve got an opening.” It’s Kind Of Cute how poor Rockhoof was ready to turn into a statue and changes his mind just because Yona likes him so much. Episode is OK.

WHAT LIES BENEATH: Makes it considerably more clear that Cozy is a villain without laying it on too heavy. Allows fanservice for Smolder. Otherwise a fairly standard Test of Fear & Friendship thingy.

SOUNDS OF SILENCE: I didn’t expect to like this episode and honestly, I kinda don’t. The kirins are neat-ish but I really hate Autumn Blaze. There’s this trope in a lot of media (e.g. Dori from Finding Nemo) that comes across as an adult / middle-aged woman trying really, really hard to be energetic and girly and it’s just annoying and weird. Autumn is that.

FATHER KNOWS BEAST: Throughout this episode Smolder is a really good big sis to Spike and he even hand-makes her a thank you gift. Also, Spike explicitly mentions Twilight as being his Real Family. Both are Very Cute. It was pretty obvious that slobby jackass wasn’t his father, but the whole sham was funny enough.

SCHOOL RAZE: Unfortunately, this finale relies on a Deus Ex Machina (“The Tree saves the day because the New Rangers are such good friends”). Two if you count “Twilight uses the Spirit Bomb to escape Tartarus”. Other than that, it’s okay. Not the worst finale I guess.

I dunno, I kinda like Discord being an A-hole sometimes, he’s still getting used to the whole being reformed thing, (when you’ve been a jerk for centuries that’s not something that instantly goes away) and he still has a nicer side to him. (Like befriending Spike & Big Mac.) He even admits when he was wrong now.

Frankly it kinda makes more sense that a former villain would still have some of their negative traits. I actually prefer that over reformed characters like Sunset whom lost all their negative traits, (except her temper which rarely comes up anyway) and are basically whole different characters now. I find those kinda characters kinda dull, and a bit unrealistic. (I also feel it’s kinda unfair Diamond Tiara just vanished after her reformation.)
I kinda prefer Discord still being Discord personally, as opposed to being a whole different boring “always nice” character.

I remember a fan compared Discord, and the character “Q” (from Star Trek) whom he’s kinda based on. He said Q is basically like an old man who parks in the handicapped parking space, not to be evil, but because he’s been around so long he just doesn’t care. Discord on the other hand is more childish, because he’s likely a few eons younger then Q, so in a way is a more youthful Q. He just doesn’t know any better.

Q was never presented as a good guy; he was almost always presented as an antagonist, even when he was ultimately helpful, and was at best neutral.

Discord however, we’re expected to treat as one of the protagonists, when he is frequently tormenting his friends for fun.

He’s not always “torturing” them, sometimes he’s helping them, or dropping clues, and such. If he wasn’t chaotic, he wouldn’t be Discord.
He’s shown to have a bit of a soft side too.

Discord’s never been a good guy, but he’s not evil, or anything.

I’m starting to feel like I’m the only one who doesn’t have any beefs with Discord. (At least in this thread.)

Only episode with him I found kinda weak was “What about Discord?” despite having some amusing visual gags, (Flutterorange lulz) I felt it was a li’l dull/slow paced, and the dialogue humor kinda falls flat, and it feels like another “Twilight tries to overthink/overdo something” episode.
And you can’t say he was completely a “jerk” in that ep’, as he actually got along with most of the characters in it. It wasn’t a “Discord feels left out” ep’, it was more of a “Twilight feels left out.”

I dunno, I like Discord better then other reformed-villain characters, partially because he still has his occasional villainous lapses, and is no saint. (Episodes like “Discordant Harmony” show he’s not all bad though.)
The others either become “too nice/perfect-citizens/kinda-boring,” (As I kinda feel about Sunset & Starlight, not hating BTW) or in Diamond Tiara’s case, non-existent/unnecessary.
(Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed/supported Tiara’s reformation, especially her adorable sad song, and finding out she has repressed self-esteem issues, and a vulnerable side. Though, her only role in the show was to be an obstacle for the CMC, so there’s really not much they can do with a reformed Tiara nowadays that can’t be done with any other character.)
Trixie still has most of her ego/flaws, but she only seems good as a foil now for other characters like Starlight, and isn’t very interesting by herself.

To be honest, the closest thing to a “rather obnoxious” MLP character to me is Rumble. I could hardly stand him in “Marks & Recreation.” lol
