Pretty much. I feel that none of the episodes of the show are completely without merit, but “Princess Spike” is honestly one of only two episodes in the entire show that I consider to be truly “bad” and not simply just “okay”. The other episode being “MMMMystery on the Friendship Express,” but even that one is a perfectly fine episode right up until the ending completely ruins it.

It’s why I consider MOTFE to be AKR’s parvum opus in terms of her MLP work. Having Fluttershy, Rarity, and Rainbow Dash (and even Apple Jack in a deleted scene that was cut for time) ruin a cake that not only Pinkie worked incredibly hard on but also could have very well costed her her job had they not had enough time and resources to craft a new dessert, and then sit by while Pinkie wrongfully gives the rival bakers crap for it was such a terrible ending that I’m surprised that it didn’t end up getting as much attention as TMMDW’s ending.

It wasn’t even Pinkie’s hard work. It was the Cakes’. THEY’RE the ones those three should’ve apologized to, not Pinkie. And the worst part? “Don’t give into temptation just because it sounds appealing” would’ve been a GREAT moral to teach to kids, but instead the moral is about how Pinkie Pie shouldn’t jump to conclusions. Which, admittedly, is also a good moral and one that Pinkie needed to learn, but it just… aaaaargh.

Basically, but it has never been explored any Spike always ends up going back to be Twilight’s personal maidguy.
This is expecially infuriating when you see how the protagonists already had personal arcs or changing points while Spike yet has to even start his own.
 
I always thought his crush on Rarity was his arc and I think it is also already kind of done. What does he want from Rarity, anyway? It wasn’t romance. He revealed that he just wants to be friends with her and he did accomplish that. In spades. I get the impression that she literally loves his company now compared to back in the days where he has to stalk around her house and do chores for her like taking out the garbage and after all that, she just shoos him away.
 
I think Rarity hangs out with Spike voluntarily more than Spike hangs out with Twilight by obligation.

Look here’s what’s going to happen. Starlight fans and detractors are already in their camps, both sides will get plenty of ammo for whatever argument they want to try to dispell. It’s the Princess fans that are going to be the ones you want to look out for. Will the episode showcase them well or throw them under a bus, that’s going to be the major factor for some.
 
Unless the synopsis isn’t completely correct and the episode is actually just a massive prank pulled by the sisters on Starlight and they’re both laughing their asses off at Starlight’s panic attack.

Spike’s crush is something they simply tossed out off the window but now and then they bring it back because that’s all what they have to work with him.
 
It always irks me when somebody whines and complains about how Spike is a character so difficult to use when the writers and direction themselves are the ones who turned him into a character difficult to use. They turned him into a bumbling idiot for cringe comedy’s sake, and then complain because he’s “difficult to use?”

I think it depends on how people define the word “crush” compared to how Spike views his own crush on Rarity. For the past 7 seasons, I don’t ever recall Spike ever making attempts to, well for a lack of a better term, court Rarity in any way. I mean, he used to do stuff to impress her but when you think about it, if he doesn’t need romantic feed back from her, does he even need to court her. Spike effortlessly gets Rarity’s attention now.

I do wish they would address Spike’s crush. Either confirm it or deny it but at least do something with it. Hell actually deny it and teach kids the lesson that your first crush/love is probably not going to work out and it’s neither parties fault, that liking someone but them not liking you back is not your fault nor is it the person who doesn’t return their affection either.

That does seem like a great lesson. I’m trying to remember what other show or cartoon had the same moral lesson, and honestly I’m drawing a blank here.

Spike honestly works best as a supporting character, usually in the “snarky Straight Man” role. Heck, he was pretty great in that kind of role in the first 3 episodes of this season.
