Season 7 Episode Discussion [Speculation, Discussion, Spoilers] (SPOILER YOUR LEAKS)

“You only like it because you hate the real fans~”

Nice.

• There were some genuinely hilarious and clever lines. I laughed out loud a few times.  
• It’s great to have another episode that centers around the mane 6 with Twilight at the center. Almost gave it a similar feel as an episode from an earlier season.  
• Rather than being insulted, I mostly enjoyed how they poked fun at the fan base.  
• Really loved the song. Probably going to be listening to it several times in the next few days.
   
   
  Cons:
   
• Some of the dialogue felt forced. The part where ponies were laughing at Pinkie saying mundane things was awkward and not in an enjoyable way.  
• The last part with the fillies was somewhat of a mixed bag for me. On one hand, I totally get the message that the show is ultimately about friendship and that some people could stand to take the show’s lessons to heart. On the other hand, it almost felt like they were trying to insult people who put priority on things like character and story. Not that that was their intention but that’s almost how it came off.
   
  Other thoughts:
   
• No attempt at subtlety was made in this episode. Not sure if a more subtle approach would have made it better but I appreciate that the writers are willing to take risks.  
• Was expecting this episode to be more nostalgic and sentimental. What I got instead might be the most cynical episode the show has had yet. Again, pretty risky but ultimately rewarding, at least for me.  
• This episode will likely be inconsequential to the rest of the series. The events of this episode are unlikely to be brought up again and all the raging mobs of fans will not be making more appearances. It’s a lot like Slice of Life in that way.  
• Before watching it myself, I saw many who felt that the episode was specifically trying to insult the adult fans of the show. This assertion fell apart for me as the episode clearly shows many children (including the CMC!) who also misunderstood the journal.
   
  Overall:  
  The comedy and music were definitely the biggest highlights. The blurred line that often exists between insults and playful banter (in general, not just this episode) makes it even funnier for some and straight up insulting for others. As long as you don’t take any of it personally (which you shouldn’t) than this was really solid.

I still believe this episode was originally written with Spike instead of Starlight.

That moment where Starlight wanted to have a “talk” with the ponies who insulted Rarity seemed like a very Spike thing to do.
