So with a week remaining until the new season starts, I thought it might be nice for those of us who are still waiting patiently to have a bit of fun and put aside some of the negative feelings the leaks (and people discussing them) have probably caused. So with that in mind, I plan to try to comment here over the next 7 days (starting today with season 1 and ending Friday with season 7) about a favorite moment, or scene, or episode, from each of the previous seasons. You are all welcome to join in, if you’d like, and share something you liked as well. If nothing else, I think it would just be a nice way to remind ourselves of some of the things that have kept us here or stuck with us on this long road.
So… season 1. I remember I didn’t believe at first that the new My Little Pony cartoon was actually good. I’d heard it mentioned in a few places I frequented online, but most of my recollection of any sort of show was still stuck back in previous generations, along with the idea that it wasn’t something I had ever really cared about. Yet the growing number of positive comments won out and I eventually started watching the episodes in February of 2011.
And as is typical of these kinds of stories, I found I really liked the show (obviously, as I’m still here).
A moment that sticks with me from season one is probably the episode that aired around the time I finally decided to give it a go, “Suited For Success”. Rarity had already become my favorite in the earlier episode “Look Before You Sleep” (we have similar attitudes on dirt), but the one focused on her efforts to make dresses for her friends based on what they wanted (despite her superior artistic vision) still endears her to me to this day. Needless to say, there is a lot that makes the episode one of my favorites, but I think what I remember most is a comment I saw in reaction to the episode. “In any other show”, that person commented, “Rarity would have been a villain.” And it struck me that they were right. So many other animated shows would have taken the girl who loves dresses and made her shallow and materialistic, an antagonist who cared only about clothes and shopping and other such things. That they didn’t here, but made her a generous individual who only wanted to make her friends look their best was a welcome change, and something I really felt set the series apart from others like it.
