Starlight is generally acceptable after being reformed. And despite some haters, there are still more people who liked her and lots of fanarts keep appearing here

She needs a little bit more of personality, though.

Sunset is given enough personality after being reformed, and Glimmy should be like that too. I’m expecting that her friendship with Sunset in EG Mirror Magic could help her build more confidence in making friends and more detailed personality traits

Thank you, OP, for the wonderfully thorough explanation about Starlight’s character.
You’ve explained all the nuanaces and complexities of her emotional and social behavior (and problems),
perhaps better than I’ve seen so far.
This OP post should be the ‘go to’ for Starlight fans trying to explain what they enjoy about her.

Personally, I like Starlight. She is one of my favourite ponies (the others are Coloratura and Sunset Shimmer).

I know her reformation was too forced, but I don’t think she is a bad character. Actually, I feel empathy for her because I lived some of her experiences. These are some of them:

-Loosing your best friend: It hurts (really hard), especially when you think at the end that he/she doesn’t care about you.
-Trying to be more sociable and making new friends: It’s too hard when you have self esteem problems.

But anyway, it’s just my opinion. I know this thread is two months old, but it caught my attention.

I was going to post this in the normal Starlight opinion thread, but crossposting it here since it’s more appropriate. This was a little snippet I wrote more to myself than actually responding to why Every Little Thing She Does was flawed as an episode.

–
The episode is about Starlight. It focuses on Starlight. The main characters and the main character all support and react to Starlight’s actions and, as the character in focus, reflects back as she reacts back to them. The reflection is not what the main character hoped. This “cross-examination” is relayed back to Starlight who reflects once again under her teacher’s guidance. She realizes now what the conflict was and attempts to remedy it with those same main characters who were affected by her actions. They forgive her, and the main character’s lesson begins to stick even with some difficulty. All the characters give their input no matter how seemingly superficial they are to us, since we’re not the receivers. It demonstrates Starlight’s reasoning struggle with her mind and magic. Here her reasoning part is addressed, and later episodes deal with other issues she has, such as her lost charisma and leadership skills (To Where and Back Again) , her anger (All Bottled Up), impulses (A Royal Problem), and her doubts (almost all of them) and how she, with the help of Twilight, the mane five, and her own personal group of friends, all play their part in helping this pony overcome her past and her present, for a better, happier future, while she herself helps them grow as characters by presenting a new challenge to their ambivalent philosophy for them to overcome together and serving as their living testimony to the power of friendship.

Cute, But I blaming more about teacher Twilight role being soft. I really like Starlight being vocal towards Twilight actions, unlike the remane5, but all Starlight issues about her lessons is mainly Twilight discipline.

Whatever bird that's dumber than a duck. Imagine I made the effort to research that and make a new badge for it. - Either a complete retard or a full time moron, it's hard to tell which and frankly I don't care either way

In all honesty, I just don’t like what Starlight Glimmer is to the show on a meta level. She is the former grand matriarch of a totalitarian socialist regime whose ruthless behavior and treason was “punished” with a whiny speech before she was essentially welcomed back to the community she oppressed and brainwashed; and also given the reins to the show. Now everything’s about how she’s either more right than the protagonists or should be sympathized with when she’s wrong. She’s more powerful than the alicorn princesses including Twilight whose talent is magic and who is the ELement of Magic (which was already seen as OP and Mary-Sueish, but at least Twilight is always shown studying and practicing), and all of her problems are either self-made or the direct product of the company she keeps. I don’t like her and I don’t think I ever will.

Starlight makes MLP a show for adult children rather than for actual children.

That’s too much merit to Starlight. Besides I really Starlight was powerful only with her own ways and not Celestia approves it. However Starlight is weaker than princesses in my opinion, at least if we talk about mind.

@Hakirayleigh
Well I was talking about literal magic power. In terms of maturity, influence, and scope of authority, she is doubtless weaker than the princesses as she should be (imagine the damage she could’ve caused if she didn’t lack those). But she is eluding the consequences for her actions nonetheless. Granted, I’m not looking for her to be executed or banished or anything like that. But a little prison time or some other indication that other ponies actually care about the harm she causes wouldn’t hurt.

That´s Twilight fault, cause she don’t show a real justice and cause the remane5 are so forgiving ponies. Besides Starlight was clever her crimes only were witnessed by two creatures: Twilight and Spike.

I feel like the time to do it has passed. The time to throw her in jail was at the end of season 5. At this point, after 2 years of being with Twilight, I feel it would be really mean to just throw all that back on her again. She’s genuinely helped save the day several times, her mistakes aren’t malicious in nature and she really does beat herself up over it.

@gingerninja666
I’m aware of that. It’s something that needed to happen and didn’t. Luckily for all involved, it seems that long-term consequences of poor behavior just aren’t things in Equestria. I guess that there’s no point in punishing anybody for doing anything in a world where any and all harm caused by anyone in it is more shallow and temporary than a papercut unless it’s necessary for dramatic reasons.

@darknessRising24
You can rest assured that I don’t feel that way about her. She is a character, and nothing more or less than the product of her writers. The evil incarnate is the force she represents, the one that claims to be Marxist (which would be bad enough) but is truly selfish at heart and is gaining ever more control of everything, in basically the way Starlight herself has. It’s not her fault. She isn’t real and therefore has no personal agency, and by extension no accountability for her behavior.

@Hakirayleigh
It used to really bother me that people used that as a defense for utterly reprehensible characters both fictional and not, but I just don’t care any more. Just like I don’t care about the fate of people who elect real-life dictators or their limp-noodle opposites as much as I did when I was younger. People deserve what they endorse.

Twilight, like Celestia made risky bets: Celestia hoped Twilight achieve her alicorn status by defeat powerful threats with her friends or her assistant. Twilight on ther hand, always forgive her former enemies showing a lack of real justice. Maybe Sunset made a lot of improving with her friends. Starlight has made a lot of interesting friends, but of course Twilight gives her a lot of freedom to made crazy magic. That’s good cause Starlight aren’t almost marionettes like the remane5. But of course the staff always show the princesses made no safe decisions.

@Hakirayleigh
There’s no bet on Twilight’s part. She fought Starlight as hard as she could until she realized there was no way she could defeat her, so she gave up. The only way to stop Starlight was to show her the devastation that her victory would bring. Starlight was a “gentle tyrant”, driven by her belief in the unshakable righteousness of her actions. Every other villain that Twilight faced, she first defeated then in the case of the redeemed, rebuilt from the ground up. The same does not apply to Starlight. There’s still nothing that anyone can do if she decides to go rogue again (both the Elements and the Princesses are completely helpless against her Cutie Mark magic), and it’s worse now that she has a cadre of allies, at least two with their own armies. Even moreso than Discord, the living avatar of Chaos, Starlight’s allegiance is bound entirely by her personal whims.

But like I said, there’s no real consequences in this show for anyone’s actions, so nothing that happens in it matters. Least of all its morals.
