Now that I think about it, there actually wasn’t much of a negative reaction to Starlight’s cameo in Fluttershy Leans In… I’m sure a couple people got mad at a mere cameo, but I mostly saw people preemptively making fun of people who might get mad.

@Amethyst_Crystal
You saying that anytime she’s in an episode from simply a short scene then she is framed as the protagonist.
Well aside the obvious common sense of when an episode is literally supposed to be following her and therefore she has to be the protagonist (Half of the Crystalling, No Second Prances, ELTSD, S6 Finale, All Bottled Up, A Royal Problem).
But you’re basically exaggerating it to when it’s just a short scene which is ridiculous. So she shows up for a short scene in Fluttershy Leans In and suddenly she’s the protag? And Spice Up Your Life? The Christmas Carol episode? The Times They Are a Changeling?
None of these episode suddenly frame her as the protag.

I take back what I said about short cameos being ‘protagonist framing’, then. That was exaggerated.
However Starlight is the major protagonist for the bulk of the episodes she appears in, which is unusal.
The mane six have a greater percentage of background appearances (except likely Twilight, even now).

The only post-redemption not-a-villain ‘Starlight episodes’ that weren’t short cameos where she wasn’t in the lead role are ‘The Times They are a Changeling’ (featuring spike), and ‘Rock Solid Friendship’ (featuring Pinkie and Maud).

In other Starlight episodes, the majority of scenes follow her perspective. Yes, even ‘Hearth’s Warming Tail’, especially if we count the story as just a metaphor for Starlight’s own history.

More importantly, she has an ongoing character growth arc,
concerning her redemption and rehabilitation through friendship.
Twilight likewise had a character evolution throughout season 1-3.

Time to open a can of worms. Remember, this is just my opinion.

So I saw an EqG episode. I think it was the Dance Magic thing. Now I don’t watch EqG cause I hate high school settings but I wanted to see how Sunset is compared to Starlight. I was expecting mane6 + Sunset but no, I was super wrong. That’s a mane7 right there. Sunset is written to integrate well with the 6 other characters. At leas, IMO.

Starlight’s not written that way in MLP. She’s written separate from the mane6, doing her own thing. We get montages and pictures but hardly any on screen stuff. This isn’t bad by itself. The CMCs are written this way for the most part but there’s three of them. For Starlight, it hurts her character. The viewers don’t get enough chances to know her personality and the only ponies she interacts with is Twilight and Trixie who both are portrayed so high strung that they both out shine Starlight.

To top it off, when Starlight was reformed, the writers lobotomized her original personality. When I saw the IDW interpretation of Starlight with Sunburst, I realized the writer was channeling Starlight’s original control freak dictator personality but using it to tease and emotionally abuse Sunburst for comedy effect. Its like we still have the S5 Starlight but reformed. And I prefer this comic version of Starlight.

On the show, she’s a nervous wreck. Always afraid to screw up her lessons, afraid she’ll be disowned by Twilight and afraid to not make friends. To top it off, her talent is magic but ponies are telling her to not rely on her talents. If the writers keep restricting this character with so many insecurities, we’ll never get to know her personality and she’ll leave nothing but a dull impression on viewers.

The effect gets doubly negative when the writers put her in roles where it seems like she’s destined for greatness like saving the world or lecturing Equestria’s rulers. This is why some fans call her a Mary Sue. Most people would rather have a bumbling hero or a sociopath megalomaniac saving the world than a Mary Sue. Why? Because its interesting to watch.

This is my latest opinion about Starlight. Please please please, I want the comic book version of her on the show. Her personality stands out and is really memorable and strong. Stop writing her like she has nothing going on. Give her a purpose or the very least a dream.

I would like it, but a reformed Starlight like at the comic Hasbro won’t allow. Because she showed take advantage of a lot of ponies, even her new friends like Trixie, Maud and her childhood friend boyfriend . I understand the writers want Starlight makes different new friends with not common personalities. But a comic starlight characterization has at least 1% can happen. It’s more probable than AJ’s parents are alive.

I kinda agree to an extent. I tend to hear that characterization is generally better in the comics for a lot of characters.

I still ghink of Star as having two modes in the show. The nervous wreck and her pissed off side or otherwise sassy side.

Twilight: “Spike, you’re a genius.”

Starlight:Yeah… (voice dripping with venom and coldness) genius.”

““About brunch… you know what, jalapeno red velvet omlettes sound gross. I just can’t”

(Rips cowbell off of her and Maud’s necks) “Oooooooops” (evil grin)

“Gee…thanks for believing in me, Twilight”

Celly: “Alright Starlight. We’ll do this.”

Starlight: “Good choice. Not that you had one”

Granted, i do wish we saw ths side more often, but in another way i like the contrast at points. Starlight being earnestly sweet but also having this tone of bitterness sometimes.

You keep citing the same 3 page preview as how IDW does Starlight different, but she’s been in more stories than that. Most of the time it has her expressing the same reluctance to make friends or single minded focus on magical solutions like the show does.

And the reverse still happens. As seen with her interactions with Trixie and Maud, she’s fully capable of having confidence and friendliness that the comic preview had. The only real difference is the lack of familiarity in their mannerisms.

So really you’re just asking for less “Nervous Starlight” and more “Confident Starlight”.
