I wonder what her childhood was like to make her do what she did. Like, it takes more than just a naughty kid to go that far.

A villain that was built up from a subtle introduction throughout the season instead of being either a one-shot, or someone reformed within the span of an episode? In My Little Pony?

I feel sorry for her. Sure she’s a manipulative psychopath, but at the end of the day she’s still a child. But I guess like Diamond Tiara or the changlings(sans Chrysalis) I guess she’ll have to take the road to reformation the long way around.
 
I imagine in S9 or what have you Tirek will betray her just like he did Scorpan and Discord in the past and maybe then she’ll finally see the error of her ways.
 
Also I hate to think what horrible thing happened to this child when she was younger to turn her into what she is now.

I’d like to know what her parents are like, if she even have any.
 
Also it really bothers me how she was thrown into Tartarus, despite being a little kid, with no questions asks. Starlight Glimmer did a similar thing, and she was promoted into Twilight’s personal student.

I have a feeling Starlight and Twilight don’t know Celestia put Cozy in Tartarus. I imagine if they did it wouldn’t sit well with them. As hard as Starlight defended Stygian in the S7 finale I can’t see her of all ponies being ok with Cozy being in Tartarus, even after what she did to her. When she and Tirek eventually break out and everyone does find out I would think Starlight might have a few choice words for Celestia.

there’s so much about cozy glow that just doesn’t add up. where are her parents? where did she come from? why didn’t she know anything at all about friendship? how does she know a diversion when she sees one? how can she be so hateful, without hating anypony? but there is one thing I really want to know.

I don’t want the writers to tell me. I want to speculate on it, and then have them reveal the truth in the story!
 
cozy doesn’t exactly seem like the randomly huggy type to me. what if it wasn’t just because it was the first thing she grabbed?
 
and why does she have a skull at all? is it somepony she knew? who was close to her, maybe?
 
you don’t have to answer, I mean. I’m just putting those questions out there. that skull really seems to capture how strange the circumstances are of cozy glow.

Big Jim alluded to Cozy being an Orphan. So that might be at least a piece of the puzzle. If she grew up without family or friends I can see how a kid would go to the illogical extremes she did. Her whole plan, while well thought out was only something a kid could come up with. The way she tapped her friendship helped badge to that little crown. She was gonna be the empress of friendship and have all the friends, all the power!
 
Sounds to me like some extreme overcompensating. I think just like Starlight or Tempest before her something happened in the past that hurt her. Broke her, led her to believe the way she did. The real question is…what!?
 
Also I know it’s for purposes but does Equestria not have psychiatric clinics? Cause again, Cozy need help, and putting a child next to her evil idol in a kid friendly version of Hell is kind of the exact opposite of that.
 
You know at this point I think Celestia makes stupid decisions on purpose just to see what happens. Can Twilight usurp her already!?

LET’S TURN THIS INTO AN APPRECIATION THREAD!  

Total psychopath, seemingly beyond rehabilitation. That’s unprecedented for a MLP, and she’s still just a filly too. Disturbing character.

I am inclined to believe Cozy is just plain evil.  
But I also strongly doubt she’s a child.
 
How the hell does a pony child become penpals with a freaking demon dude in tartarus?  
Why would she try opening a ‘vortex to another realm’?  
Why would she destroy magic in Equestria?  
Not to mention the odd ‘you ponies!’ line.  
‘Twilight and her lackies’? ‘Future empress of friendship’?
 
There’s so many things too obscenely bizarre for this to be an actual pony filly.  
That all being said, the writers did do a good job of making her suspicious behaviour very subtle for her first few appearances.  
The one that always stood out was when Sweetie Belle was helping her do a friendship quiz, pointed to Twilight’s cutie mark symbol of magic/friendship, and Cozy answered ‘Power’.  
Even Sweetie winced at that one. Guess it all makes sense now.

But it still doesn’t make sense.
 
As in her first appearance she was shown to have a concience, and genuinely feel bad when she caused the CMC to get in trouble. How we know this? She was all alone when she showed it, she had no reason to keep a facade. Plus, she didn’t push the CMCs into the magic circle like Starlight, she just locked them up.
 
So this either, early installment weirdness combined with a coincidence, or a foreshadowing of what is to come. Either way, it doesn’t add up with everything else said in this topic.

Yeah, that thing from her first episode is why I doubted she was evil.  
Honestly, if you compare her first appearance with the finale,  
it’s kind of hard to figure out why she did what she did,  
unless she was just using them from the start to get into the school.
