It’s a shame that the original cartoon isn’t on netflix. Same goes for the first two specials and the movie.

Scandalous! You can watch (almost) all the G1 stuff on Dailymotion though if you like. It’s not the greatest picture quality but at least you won’t be deprived of old school pone.

on another note, I’ve been wondering…..do you think there’s a g1 equivalent to g4 Star Dreams? (I’ve checked, and there are no ponies who share that name in the g1 toyline, but there are a lot of star-themed ponies…)

You’d have to get pretty specific to match that mane, and there don’t seem to have been many multi-coloured mane baby ponies.

Hot air balloons! Can it really be MLP without balloon hijinx? No of course not, as all of these ponies will attest:

Truth to tell, it took G1 until My Little Pony Tales (and the episode that’s also named Up, Up and Away!) to really explore the animated possibilities of hot air balloon misadventure. But what a doozy of an episode!
 

 
This is quite surprising, given how much the G3 and G4 shows have used them as pretty much the quintessential mode of pony transport. They’re also used as delivery mechanisms for aerial cartoon chaos: the best examples being the Grand Theft Blimp and rescue flotilla in A Very Minty Christmas, and the sprawling and complex chasedown in The Return of Harmony Part 2. But I’m getting ahead of myself. Suffice to say that G1 was there first, and lighter than air transport has become a quintessentially pony thing.
 
But what, you ask, was the first instance? I’d love to know for sure myself. I think the first proper stab at the concept was probably 1984’s My Little Pony at the Country Fair book. It even shares a few plot elements with later stories. This book is from Year Two I think: the Show Stable is shown, but it doesn’t feature Megan and Danny and it’s not set over the rainbow so it’s a bit of an oddity in pony lore. this makes me both sad and happy. Sad because she doesn’t have an early gen counterpart, and might not be included in whatever gen comes next, but happy to know that she’s truly unique.

BTW, which five ponies from MLP&F would work best in a what-my-cutie-mark-is-telling-me switcheroo? Because I’ve got this bit by somepony with Slugger’s cutie mark symbol lodged in my mind:

Gotta love the way MLP shouts out to old technology. As far as the exploration of space, which seems to be a thing in G1, high-altitude ballooning was definitely old school. Kudos to the creative team. It was a great way to make it possible for simple earth ponies to bond with the pegasi and magical interstellar ponies in the heavens, and unicorn queens living in castles in the sky… Or, if you happen to be a certain purple dragon aspiring to catch a shooting star. But then, there is also Lofty, who happens to be a pegasus and doesn’t need to hop on a balloon to get around but does it anyway because it’s fun.

Seems to me like G1 symbols are slightly different, being more about personality, as opposed to cuties marks which are about skills. That said, five ponies that I think would be fun to switch up…
