The My Little Pony Movie

Background Pony #ABA6
I’m still fairly disappointed this film didn’t win over more non-fans. Even before the film was announced, I was fully expecting an MLP film to leave a Lego Movie-type effect where many would come in very skeptical but end up being blown away by it.

And don’t tell me this film was made squarely for the fans. Compared to the first two EqG films (which were made squarely for the fans), it’s clearly written and structured in a way that strongly suggests they were aiming well beyond that, not to mention the fact it even got a wide release at all.

On the DVD there’s even a longer intro version as a deleted scene that was designed precisely for that. No idea why they didn’t keep it in the final release, to be honest.

The movie has a 6.2 rating on IMDB.

Is the stigma of MLP still that strong?

Right About Everything
Sounds like it made a significant profit, then.

I would be cautious with that number though because it was an outside agency making that assessment, and they admitted that numbers can be wildly inaccurate due to the difficulty in taking into account ‘hidden costs’.

Considering the rather long and arduous development of the movie, I expect there to have been a fair amount of those.

1 quick questions.
do people still think 2D animation cost more than 3D?

It can do. It normally does.

3D animation is slightly more ‘idiot proof’, in that the software should stop things like animation errors, off model occurrences, coloring issues and the like from happening, and it’s almost always faster (which means cheaper by default). 3D artists are also more common than 2D artists, so they’re easier to hire. This all means it’s cheaper on a budget.

Middle of the road animation… this is where it gets slightly more complicated. At this level, 3D animation can still look very cheap, and animation is often stiff and lifeless. The ‘idiot proof’ nature of the software becomes an issue, because many principles of animation designed to give the animation life and weight (and to ‘cheat’ by abusing the properties of human vision) become more difficult to implement. 3D animation can still be cheaper, but you really get what you pay for. Check out the animation quality of say… Sophia the First, compared to Tangled the Series.

At the high end… that gets a bit more complex, and it really has to do with talent at that level. America has the best 3D animators in the world, Japan likely has the best 2D animators. Princess and the Frog for instance took a lot longer than expected (and cost more) because many of the animators lacked experience with the medium.

There’s a cinema in my city where they re-release some movies in a specific schedule. Some movies are european, others are asian, indie films… this time is about animated movies. And My Little Pony The Movie is one of the options, which is great.
