I liked it too. Back when we removed it, though, the damn thing was a serious load risk because someone could happily just start at current and scroll back to the beginning of time, forcing the site to rapidly try and thumbnail every image in the entire database at once to serve to you. Back when we didn’t have persistent thumbnails and only stored them in cache, that would mean a truly ridiculous amount of image resizing operations, which are not computationally trivial, and could seriously slow down the site for extended periods. OTOH now that we store thumbnails persistently this probably wouldn’t be so serious but I imagine it’d still be a pain in the cache.

Comments on images that are deleted before the merger is made are not copied across, so SOP for the team is to delete comments referencing the dupe before we do the merging, so you can’t even tell they were ever there. Sometimes we forget and you end up with comments referencing the dupe on the far side, but eh, things happen. Of course this doesn’t apply when the comments are on the image that we’re merging into (which usually means merging forward because higher res/quality image) so it’s not perfect.

Frankly at the moment I’m in more of a classic rock swing and I’m tending to listen to things towards the more traditionally rock ‘n’ roll end of metal, so bands like Mötley Crüe and AC/DC have prime positions in my playlist right now. Generally though I like good old fashioned classic heavy metal, power metal, and prog above most else. Have to put myself in the category of folks who get put off by most death metal vocals, I’m afraid - the style doesn’t do anything for me and I’ve got no interest in forcing myself to repeatedly listen to something I don’t actually like the sound of in an effort to understand the lyrics.

How can you get through 4 pages of a so-called “metal thread” with barely the tiniest off-hand mention of Iron Maiden? Judas Priest? Black Sabbath? GET ON MY LEVEL PLEBIANS.
For serious though, huge fan of Iron Maiden, but I’m incapable of answering any question that goes “What is your favourite X” (unless X is “pony”). A list of a few bands that spring immediately to mind when you ask me what I like would look like this:

Your concern is appreciated but the APIs available for interaction with the site are sufficient that someone who wanted to already could make an automated downloader that fetched whatever set of images you wanted without having to browse the site at all. The number of people who would actually do this would probably be pretty small and wouldn’t actually put much load on the server because serving static images and json is really light on the load - producing and serving html and generating/optimising image thumbnails is where the grunt work is. Bandwidth use might be a bit higher but that’s not a bottleneck for us at this time. In fact, people who solely used such a tool to interact with the site might actually put less load on the servers than otherwise, depending on how often it checked for new content.
Clover may make statements that directly contradict information in this post because he knows more about this stuff than I do and I am not infallible so don’t accept anything I say about server matters as the gospel truth

I’m pleased to be able to report that I can kick Vlakc’s arse at TF2. TSP’s is trickier, but still kickable.

I sort-of have experience-by-proxy with minecraft server administration but don’t have access to a server capable of running an instance - MC needs way more memory than my VPS has available. Otherwise I’d love to run one. It’s good fun. I hope parp or someone else comes along to set something up.

The TF2 server has only been up like a day and hasn’t seen much use yet, but if interest develops I can see about putting on popular custom maps and possibly some decent mods people think it should have. It seems to run smoothly but hasn’t been tested with a large number of players (I think the most that have been on is maybe 5 or 6), although the load so far indicates it should be able to cope fine.
I’m also capable of running a Space Station 13 server if any of you fine folk are familiar with that terrible, terrible gem of a game. My branch of choice is the latest available revision of /tg/station, and I’d be happy to put a server up if we can rustle up enough interested players to make it worthwhile.
I know parp has been talking about setting up a minecraft server as well but I don’t know how that’s going.

We all like games, so in this thread we will discuss gameservers run by derpibooru people for derpibooru people, and we can all game together in harmony. If you’re running or thinking about running some sort of gameserver for the community, post here to tell us about it! I’ll endeavour to keep this first post updated with all the servers I know about, but I will probably only know about it if you post in this thread.

As an experiment, I’ve set up a TF2 server on my VPS. At the moment it’s a completely vanilla 20-slot server that lives at 178.79.133.201:27015, named “derpiboo.ru - Official Derpiserver”. She should be able to handle the load of a single TF2 server without problems, but I can’t guarantee it’ll run perfectly. Also, server is physically located in London, so those of you outside Europe may not get fantastic latency, but she’s got a 100Mbps pipe so bandwidth shouldn’t be an issue.
I’ve run SRCDS servers before and I know what I’m doing, generally.

This is a feature that will probably be implemented in the near future, and certainly something on the list of things to do even if it takes us a while to get to it for whatever reason. It’s amongst the simpler things, anyway.

This is to do with the way we cache fragments for efficiency. The information on those old posts is part of the cache, which will expire eventually, and then will be up to date as of the time the cache refreshes. The reason we have these caches to begin with is because dynamically generating the postcount/avatar display from the user data in the DB is very inefficient - caching allows us to significantly speed up browsing and reduce server load.
Invalidating the caches of every single post a user has made every time they post a new reply or change their avatar would be a performance degradation but I’m not sure how much of one (also one which would obviously get worse the more time that goes by and the larger the forum becomes). Clover would have to investigate. It’s possible we could reduce the expiry time on the caches to make them update much sooner - maybe let them be a few minutes out at most - but I’m not sure how much impact that would have, either.

“Voting power” solutions sound neat in theory but in practice they’re exceptionally complex to implement. It’d be nice if we could track a guy and say “ah, you always downvote twixie, so your downvotes on twixie-tagged images don’t count for as much” but that’s extremely complex to track, what with tags changing, images deleted or merged, the interference of other tags potentially leading to wildly arbitrary weightings, not to mention it makes the voting model itself much more complex, and you potentially have to retroactively update every image a user has ever voted on EVERY time they vote because it changes the weightings when they do… sure, you could write a system to do this, but it would be horrible and complicated and very intensive to actually run.

There’s currently no way of embedding anything that isn’t an image, and it’s not a planned feature for the foreseeable future. Just linking to youtube should serve you fine for now.

This is another feature that’s already on the wishlist for things we want to implement. As well as for following forum topics we’ve intended to write a system for doing the same thing with image comments for some time. It’ll be done eventually.

Our infrastructure seriously strugged in the first few days. We knew in advance that ponibooru was closing and Eco would be directing people in our direction, so we were planning to receive the influx, but we expected to have a couple more weeks to prepare for it. He shut down earlier than expected and everyone showed up while we were still looking into options for upgrading the server to handle the coming load, not to mention the traffic influx brought ought a ton of site bugs that only showed up under heavy use. Fortunately we managed to struggle through and get things fixed up, although Clover got very little sleep while keeping it together.
It all worked out anyway.

Derpibooru was exceptionally quiet before ponibooru died. For comparative purposes, on 16/06/2012 (the saturday right around when ponibooru died) we saw 35 unique visitors, less than 500 pageviews. On the following Saturday, the 23rd, we saw almost 7000 unique visitors and more than 250,000 pageviews, which is a roughly 50,000% increase in raw traffic over that week alone. Things were a bit crazy.
