North Vietnamese Army - Stuffed the Japanese during WWII(Archimedes Patti), then stuffed the French(We Were Soldiers [1/9] Movie CLIP - The French Foreign Legion [2002] HD) ^{[ *(Battle of Dien Bien Phu) ]} in 1954. Ran supplies through the Ho Chi Minh trail during US involvement, and fought alongside Viet Cong. Pretty much prepared for WWIII because of their allies.

Viet Cong - Ricefarmers Well-trained cadres of men and women taught by soviet and cuban military advisers. Used weapons from all sides of the WWII era, and some weapons made after (i.e. captured US equipment of the Korean War). In the period up to the conventional phase of 1970, they were limited to mortars, recoil-less rifles, landmines, and small-arms, relying on sneak attacks, ambushes, superior stealth, planning, marksmanship and small-unit tactics to face US forces.
_{In 1967, all Viet Cong & NVA battalions were reequipped with arms of Soviet design such as the AK-47 and RPG-2, principally of Chinese or Soviet manufacture. || Their headquarters was in Mermot, Cambodia too the whole time. ||}

China - North Vietnam’s creepy #1 fan. Gave tons of guns, ammunition, telephones/radios, automobiles, uniforms, a few hundred tanks and planes, recreational items (volleyballs, table-tennis balls, playing cards, harmonicas), & lots of food. Participated in support roles within the North, repairing US strategic bombing run damages, driving supply trucks, and manning anti-aircraft batteries. (|| claimed to be responsible for 38% of US air losses throughout the war. ||)

Soviet Union - Other biggest fan. Gave medical supplies and higher-end war materials, like surface-to-air missiles (|| Soviet crews of surface-to-air missiles managed to shoot down U.S. F-4 Phantoms over Thanh Hóa in 1965. ||). Had surveillance vessels patrol South China Sea to forecast incoming American bombers flying from Okinawa and Guam, giving Viet Cong forces time to move out of the way of bomber flight paths.

From July 1965 to the end of 1974, fighting was observed by some 6,500 officers and generals, as well as more than 4,500 soldiers and sergeants of the Soviet Armed Forces. In addition, military schools and academies began training Vietnamese soldiers—in all more than 10,000 soviet military personnel.

The KGB helped develop North Vietnamese signals intelligence, counterintelligence, and espionage capabilities through the “Vostok” program (also known as Phương Đông), which was pivotal in detecting and defeating CIA and South Vietnamese commando teams sent into North Vietnam. Also helped the Ministry of Public Security (a.k.a. Bộ Công An) recruit foreigners within high-level diplomatic circles among the Western-allies of the US, under a clandestine program known as “B12,MM” which produced thousands of high-level documents for nearly a decade, including targets of B-52 strikes. In 1975, the SIGINT services had broken information intercepted from Western US-allies in Saigon, determining that the US would not intervene to save South Vietnam from collapse.

Czechoslovakia - Saw increasing parallels between its own conflict with the Soviet Union, and North Vietnam’s conflict with the United States, whereupon Czech-made equipment and military aid increased significantly. Sent tens of thousands of Czech-made rifles as well as mortar and artillery pieces throughout the Vietnam War.

Cooperation on the development of North Vietnamese air capabilities began as early as 1956. Czechoslovak instructors and trainers instructed the North Vietnam Air Force in China and helped them develop a modernized airforce.

North Korea - Sent a fighter squadron to North Vietnam in early 1967 to back up North Vietnamese fighter squadrons defending Hanoi. Stayed through 1968, and 200 pilots were reported to have served. At least two anti-aircraft artillery regiments were sent as well. (”“I’m doing my part, too)

Republic of Cuba - Participated through the “Batallón Girón” that comprised the Cuban contingent serving as military advisors during the war. There are numerous allegations by former U.S. POW’s that Cuban military personnel were present at North Vietnamese prison facilities during the war, and that they participated in torture activities. Witnesses to this include former POW John McCain, according to his 1999 book Faith of My Fathers.

East Germany - Stasi helped with establishing an intelligence and security network. Helped a bunch with forging “Green Dragon” identity cards, which were created by Saigon in order to identify North Vietnamese combatants and were difficult to duplicate. Also provided material and technical aid to help develop and modernize the North Vietnamese economy and military, while vigorously denouncing the US war effort.

Poland - Played a substantive role in serving as an intermediary for peace-talks between Hanoi and Saigon, attempting to broker talks in 1963 between Ngô Đình Nhu and the Diem regime, and Hanoi, in an effort to prevent the expansion of the war, given that Polish representatives were the only communist nation present in Saigon and had acted as a broker and representative on behalf of Hanoi.

South Vietnamese Army - Began as just a militia of volunteer ricefarmers, ended up as the fourth-largest army in the world at the time, being very well-trained, and second only to U.S. and the IDF(Israeli Defense Force). Unfortunately became a component of political power and notably suffered from continual issues of loyalty appointments, corruption in leadership, factional in-fighting and occasional open conflict between itself.

CIDG(Civilian Irregular Defense Group) program - Devised by the CIA in early 1961 to counter expanding Viet Cong influence in South Vietnam’s Central Highlands. Beginning in the village of Buon Enao, small A-teams from the U.S. Army Special Forces moved into villages and set up Area Development Centers. Villagers were trained and armed for village defense for two weeks, while localized Strike Forces would receive better training and weapons and served as a quick reaction force to react to Viet Cong attacks. The vast majority of the CIDG camps were initially manned by inhabitants of ethnic minority regions in the country (especially Montagnard), who disliked both the North and South Vietnamese and therefore quickly took to the American advisers. The program was widely successful, as once one village was pacified, it served as a training camp for other local villages.

By 1963, the military felt that the program was a great success, but also that the CIDG units and Special Forces units were not being employed properly, and ordered Operation Switchback, which transferred control of the CIDG program from the CIA over to Military Assistance Command, Vietnam. The CIDG Program was rapidly expanded, as the entire 5th Special Forces Group, U.S. Army Special Forces, moved into Vietnam, and the CIDG units stopped focusing on village defense and instead took part in more conventional operations, most notably border surveillance. Most of these were converted to Vietnam Army Ranger units in 1970.

South Korea - Mean-ass cutthroat mercenaries hired by Lyndon Johnson on 1 May 1964, that barely did much, besides either moping around doing nothing, or systematically massacring, burying, then occasionally even spreading lit napalm over the mass-graves of at least 9,000 innocent victims throughout their part in the conflict. With-held alot of war material they were supposed to give to militia. In the end, the US paid the Republic Of Korea military $236 million for their efforts, equal to $1,531,000,000 today. (May 16 1961 coup d’état lead by Park Chung-hee)

Thailand - Army formations saw action in South Vietnam between 1965 and 1971. Thai forces saw much more action in the covert war in Laos between 1964 and 1972, though Thai regular formations there were heavily outnumbered by the irregular “volunteers” of the CIA-sponsored Police Aerial Reconnaissance Units or PARU, who carried out reconnaissance activities on the western side of the Ho Chi Minh trail.

Australia and New Zealand - Knew exactly what they needed to do from past experience, but weren’t allowed to, and instead had to play by Westmoreland’s US rules.

Philippines - 10,450 troops were dispatched to South Vietnam and were primarily engaged in medical and other civilian pacification projects. The Navy base at Subic Bay and the Clark Air Base achieved maximum functionality during the war and supported an estimated 80,000 locals in allied tertiary businesses, from shoe making to prostitution.

Taiwan - Began secretly operated a cargo transport detachment in November 1967 to assist the United States and South Vietnam. Also provided military training units for the South Vietnamese diving units, later known as the Lien Doi Nguoi Nhai (LDMN) or “Frogman unit”. Military commandos from Taiwan were captured by North Vietnamese forces three times trying to infiltrate North Vietnam.

Militant Hòa Hảo Sect - Operated from the Mekong Delta and controlled various parts of southern Vietnam during the 1940s and early 1950s. Led by a shifty asshole.(Lê Quang Vinh)

Binh Xuyen Force - Often linked to its infamous leader, General Lê Văn Viễn, it was an independent military force decreed by the former Emperor of Vietnam, whose leaders once had lived outside the law and had sided with the Viet Minh. During its heyday, Bình Xuyên funded itself with organized crime activities in Saigon while effectively battling Communist forces. Was wiped out in 1955 by the South Vietnamese Army.

FULRO(“Front Unifié de Lutte des Races Opprimées”, or United Front for the Liberation of Oppressed Races), FLHP(“Front de Liberation des Hauts Plateaux”, or Central Highlands Liberation Front), & Rogue CIDG(Civilian Irregular Defense Group) - Ethnic minority groups across Vietnam that successfully waged war against both the North & the South.
