How am I supposed to know that an image I wanted to share was previously deleted? Much less why it was?

What image did you want to upload? Usually, when this message appears, it’s either because it was merged or actually deleted.

It was >>1382074 (deleted) - I found it on Know Your Meme and thought it was relevant to MLP because of Ponychan, and two OCs that appeared in it, and also because screencaps from 4chan have been uploaded on this site before.

The original (1381685) had been deleted for Rule #3.

Right, well, I had no idea that it had been previously deleted, and I thought it was just barely related enough. Guess it’s meant to only be on Know Your Meme.

That doesn’t answer the question of “how is someone supposed to know the image they’re trying to upload has been previously deleted” - the message in question is a custom deletion reason, not automatic.

There are a few folks who repeatedly reupload the same image over and over, like; legendarily so, so all deleted images include the text “If you originally uploaded the file previously located here, please don’t re-upload it - contact us if you feel this was in error and we’ll talk! We’re only human, and mistakes happen.”.
 
Beyond that, sometime the volunteer deleting the image adds that to the deletion reason as well, especially if the image has already been deleted before. And of course if you do that once, your browser caches the full response and will auto fill for you, so it’s just a “Rule #n” and a carriage return away.
 
I think the automatic duplication detection stuff sometimes grabs these duplicates so the uploader knows that it’s previously been deleted, or is completely blocked from uploading it, but not always. Depends on how recently the previous image has been deleted and the phase of the moon. Sorry for the hand waving, I haven’t seen how the code does its thing, and I haven’t discerned the pattern through use.

I just asked for >>1399801 (deleted) to be deleted since I was trying to reupload it to fix an issue with colors, and it was. Now I can’t upload it again.
