Background Pony #8147
About a year ago I posted a cover image for a fanfic entitled A Pony Shop of Horrors. A lot of people in comments seemed very interested in the fic, but after some failed attempts to get the first chapter published on fimfiction.net, I decided to move on to work on other projects. But to those who are interested, here’s what I had submitted to fimfiction:

On the twenty-first day of the month of April, in a crazy fantasy world not much different than our own, the Equestrian race encountered a deadly threat to its very existence. And this terrifying enemy surfaced, as such enemies often do, in the seemingly most innocent, and unlikely, of places…

“Ladies and Gentlecolts! You’re listening to the ‘Vinyl Scratch’ on K-colt radio!” came the voice of DJ P0N-3 over the radio Twilight had been listening to while working in her basement. “I’m your host, the untouchable, the invincible, un-rival-able, DJ P0N-3!”

“‘Unrivalable’ isn’t even a word,” mumbled an unenthusiastic voice.

“And you all know my sexy co-host, Octavia!”

“Um, yes, good morning everyone! We have some special guests on our show today, the newly wed Princess Cadance and Shining Armor, captain of the royal guard!”

“That’s right! They’re gonna tell us all about their romantic honeymoon, and maybe we’ll even get some embarrassing stories about Twilight Sparkle. Speaking of which, Tavi, have you-”

The sound was drowned out by a sudden crash of several objects being knocked off a shelf. “Nonono! Get back here!” cried a frantic Twilight as a small black shape dashed across the floor. The purple unicorn had been working in the library’s basement on a new top secret science project. So far the project was yielding some ….unsatisfactory results. Finally she found a basket which she teleported over the creature, only to have the basket fly up in air and shoot across the room. It crashed right into an open cabinet. Twilight slammed it shut and placed as many lock spells on it as she could think of. Several loud clawing and thumping could be heard from the inside. “AND STAY IN THERE!” yelled a frustrated Twilight Sparkle.

“Hey Twilight! Everything okay down there?” a nervous sounding Spike asked from the top of the stairs. “I heard a lot of loud noises coming from down here, I thought you were being attacked!”

“Yes, dear, we were awfully concerned about you!” asked a beautiful, caring Rarity. “You’re not being harmed by any sort of mangy ruffian are you? Because if you are, just say the word!” At that moment the fashionista’s daintiness vanished and she started to show her wild side.

“No, I’m fine!” Twilight quickly responded. “Everything’s great, just great!”

“You sure? Because if anypony has touched you-!”Rarity began to flare up.

“No, really, the situation’s under control down here. I’ll be right up.”

“Oh well that’s good to he-WAHAHAHA!” Rarity screamed as a teleporting Twilight nearly knocked her over.

“Whoops! I guess I overshot the stairs a bit,” Twilight apologized. “So, Rarity, what brings you here today? You’re not wearing a new dress so I guess we can rule out a few reasons.”

“She’s looking for Fluttershy,” chimed in Spike. “No one’s seen her all day!”

“What?”

“Well, it’s the darnest thing,” began Rarity, “This morning started off the same as usual. I woke up, crawled out of bed in my stunningly gorgeous silk pajamas and then I made my usual breakfast of eggs-“

“Uh, maybe you should get to the part about Fluttershy,” Twilight hastened Rarity, who clearly had no problem with going into every minute detail about her day.

“Oh, all right,” Rarity sighed,”Well as you know, Fluttershy and I have a weekly spa get-together.”

“And let me guess, she wasn’t there,” Twilight finished.

“Yes,” said Rarity, slightly ticked off by Twilight’s unladylike rudeness. “Knowing Fluttershy, I knew would intentionally miss our appointment. So I figured I’d come here before going all the way to her cottage to see if you had seen her.”

“I told her we hadn’t seen her all day and that you were busy downstairs,” Spike answered.

“And little Spikey-Wikey here acted like such the gentlecolt to me while we waited for you,” the white unicorn petted the little dragon’s spikes. Spike blushed a bit. Normally he hated it when ponies would treat him like a baby, but when it came from his crush, he let it slide.

“I haven’t seen her either,” Twilight said as she walked them to the main area of the library, “I’m really sorry to keep the two of you waiting, it’s just I’ve been busy working on a new experiment (that’s a good word for it). I hope you weren’t waiting for very long.”

“Oh, not at all, dear,” Rarity replied, “But I should probably go by Fluttershy’s house to see if she’s alright.. Would you two like to accompany me?”

Spike graciously accepted. “Of course we would!”

“But we’ve got other things we have to do today,” Twilight interjected as she bucked Spike up onto her back. She led the troubled Rarity to the library’s front door.

“Well, let me know if you hear anything and good luck with your, erm, ‘things.’”

“Will do,” Twilight waved as Rarity trotted away, her gorgeously styled tail moved back and forth to the rhythm of her footsteps. Twilight slammed the door and gave a stern look at Spike.

Spike returned Twilight’s look with one of puzzlement. “What?”

“Spike, you shouldn’t look at a mare’s, you know,” Twilight tilted her head towards her tail.

“I can’t help it, Twi! I just can’t keep my eyes off her. Haven’t you ever been in love? You know, with something other than a book?”

The unicorn gave Spike another dirty look. She knew he knew better, but even still, she couldn’t stay mad at him. She let out a loud sigh and headed towards the basement. “Anyway, none of that’s important right now. What is important is what I was doing when Rarity came by. Now Spike,” Twilight’s tone suddenly became ore serious, “I need you to promise not to tell anypony about what you see.”

“I promise!”

“Pinkie promise?”

“Cross my heart and hope to fly, stick a-you know the rest.”

Twilight giggled. “That’s my number one assistant!”

With Spike still on her back, Twilight headed towards the basement. The door creaked open. Twilight took a deep breath and looked back at Spike. “Remember your Pinkie Promise?” Spike nodded.

As soon as she started to head down the stairs, she suddenly heard faint knocking on the front door. “Ugh,” she sighed, “Now who could that be?” While bothered by yet another interruption, she decided that the revelation could wait a few more minutes and closed the basement door. A thumping noise came from behind the door. I’m sure it was nothing, she thought. I put like twenty spells on that cabinet, there’s no way it could’ve gotten out.
` Twilight sprinted to the door, Spike clinging to her back for dear life as she ran. When she opened the door, she saw a concerned Rarity standing besides a teary eyed, bright yellow pegasus. Rarity proceeded to speak the obvious.

“Well, I found her.”

It’s not the best, but I’m still proud of what I had written. There are actually a few different intro’s that I’ve typed, as well as a few partially written songs that were planned to be apart of the fic. I even started writing a MST3K style framing device that was ultimately scrapped. Basically the goal of the fic was, much like Double Rainboom, to make as many references as possible while still telling an interesting story. Unfortunately I don’t really have time to write long fanfics anymore, so I doubt I’ll ever finish it.
