Um no, Sombra was DESPISED when Season 3 premiered: “donut steel” jokes, mocking his lack of dialogue or characterization (“Grr…crystals! GRRR!”), how he was less a villain and more an obstacle, etc…heck, Jim Miller received several death threats for voicing Sombra.

Congratulations, Cadance! You get a cookie! Now go and tell that to Thorax and Starlight Glimmer. You three can have a bad OC party and drink fan tears. Make sure to take your daughter. It’ll add a lemony taste to the tears.

Doubly relevant for villains, like Sombra.
 
I remember when his appearance was leaked on a promotional website, nobody believed he was an actual new character. A glitch in the system, an artist drawing their angst-ridden teen’s OC, red and black puke given shape…
 
Then he was made canon, “OMG BEST VILLAIN EVER!”

That is not entirely true, there are OC’s with great reputation, for instance I have always loved Snowdrop, I think she’s the cutest, prettiest and nicest OC ever.
